I was always under the impression that in Monasteries only religius masses are held. Perhaps this is a new fenomenon that Festivals and concerts are held in religius places.
Thanks Halil for this informaton.

The Turks turned our monasteries into cabarets :( And Halil, there is only one Cyprus and there is only one president. So don't give us your bullshit about your illegal pseudo state here!

Just as I was going to ask whether the south were invited to perform and whether they were asked and they turned the invitation down Sotos comes along with his crap. Sodoff sotos. Unless you have attended these annual concerts keep your foul mouth shut. But then with your uncultured mind you dont know the difference between a Classical Music Concert and Cabaret! :x You should attend and see how everything is set up with due respect to the whole environs. You could be my guest next time I am there. :D Bella Pais ? Is that a Greek word or French? Was it built by the (Latin Church) Lusignans?

Welcome to the 11th North Cyprus International Bellapais Music Festival'. We would like to express our gratitude to The President’s Office, the Embassy of Turkey, Ministry of Economy and Tourism, all governmental and private organizations, companies, establishments and lovers of music, for their valuable support and contribution in sponsoring 'The Festival' since its birth.

By means of those exceptional supports and contributions, Bellapais and the festival are proud to have an outstanding piano. A jewel with "a velvet sound", it is a Bösendorfer. Bellapais now is a distinguished concert hall at international standards with its piano too

A few years ago, after a very successful concert of 'Milano String Quartet' at the Bellapais Festival; cellist of the Quartet, Luca De Muro stated his opinion briefly,
“ We gave concerts almost everywhere, but Bellapais is different. The Abbey is alive with its architecture, illumination, acoustics, with its village and hospitable villagers, pubs and restaurants. Here, history is alive, and is a common treasure of all of us. Playing at Bellapais is a privilage and honour for all musicians. We will not forget this magnificent evening and the superb audience of Bellapais”

World famous German Bariton Ivo Berkenbusch gave an unforgettable rescital at the 8th Bellapais Festival last year, accompanied by an outstanding pianist, Matthias Müller. With his and your permission, we would like to share the words written by Ivo Berkenbusch to our Festival Committee, “Thank you for being invited to this very important international Music Festival in Bellapais. I am very surprised that your Festival is that professionally organised. Even German Festival leaders could learn from your professionality. Thank you for everything. Ivo Berkenbusch” Organizing the festival naturally takes long tiresome months , but its worth receiving such a message.

Welcome to “A unique experience at the breathtaking atmosphere of the Bellapais Abbey”, which unites music lovers of Northern Cyprus with our guests visiting this beautiful island to share and enjoy the universal language of classical music from 20 May onwards for four weeks, this year and every year.

Bellapais Abbey
The present day name is the corrupt form of the Abbaye de la Paix or the Abbey of Peace. The building is regarded as a masterpiece of Gothic art, and the most beautiful Gothic building in the Near East. The first monks who were known to have settled here were Augustinians who had to flee from Jerusalem when the city fell to Selahaddin Eyyubi in 1187. It is known that the original construction was built between 1198 - 1205, and a large part of the present day complex was constructed during the rule of French King Hugh III (1267 - 1284) . The cloisters around the courtyard and the refectory where constructed during the rule of French King Hugh IV (1324 - 1359). Following the Ottoman conquest, the monks were turned out and the building was given to the Greek Orthodox Church. The monastery begins with a gate, and the tower is a later addition. The church which is situated on one side of the courtyard is the best preserved part of the monument and dates from the 13th century. The murals which have survived above its facade are thought to be from the 15th century. The forecourt leads to cloisters of 18 arches. Under one of the northern arches, there are two Roman sarcophagi which once served as wash basins. The door behind the sarcophagi leads to the refectory of the monks. The marble lintel above the door contains the set of coats of arms of the royal families of Cyprus, Jerusalem and the Lusignans. This is an exquisite sample of Gothic architecture and the finest room in the monastery. The room contains a pulpit for addressing the monks during their meals. Six windows in the north wall which illuminate the room are reinforced by a rose window in the eastern wall. A door in the western wall leads to the kitchen and cellar built under the refectory. The rooms between the refectory and kitchen are though to have once served as lavatories. The east side of the inner courtyard was occupied by the chapter house and work rooms (undercroft). The first of these functioned as the administration office of the abbey and retains its interesting Gothic stone carving : a man with a double ladder on his back, another man between two mermaids, a woman reading, two beasts attacking a man, a woman with a rosary , a monkey and a cat in the foliage of a pear tree under which a man holding a shield is seen, and a monk wearing a cloak. The column standing at its centre is thought to have come from an early Byzantine church. The rooms of the monks occupied the second floor above this section. A pair of stairs on the south of the inner courtyard lead to the treasury room in the North - West corner of the monastery

Halil, thanks for all this info. Our GC neighbors need to be reminded,, what the Ottomans gave the Greek Orthodox Church. The Orthodox Church became the richest land owner in Cyprus because of this and grew richer by day because ofthe churches corruption (mis use of their privileged position granted to them by the Ottomans)

disclaimer:

“TRNC” is the name used by Turks to call the territory they occupy since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and illegally occupied the northern part of the Republic of Cyprus. “TRNC” is the result of ethnically cleansing the majority of the native Cypriot population from this occupied part and replacing them with Turkish settlers from Turkey.
For the above reasons “TRNC” is not recognized by any country in the world expect Turkey who illegally declared it against all International laws and by violating the human rights of 100s of thousands of people.

Bayrak is the mouthpiece of the Turkish occupying force in Cyprus. They produce various propaganda materials in an effort to present the illegal entity of “TRNC” as a normal state.

UN resolutions about the illegal declaration of the “TRNC”:

RESOLUTION 541 (1983)

Adopted by the Security Council
on 18 November 1983

The Security Council,

Having heard the statement of the Foreign Minister of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus,

Concerned at the declaration by the Turkish Cypriot authorities issued on 15 November 1983 which purports to create in independent state in northern Cyprus,

Considering that this declaration is incompatible with the 1960 Treaty concerning the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus and the 1960 Treaty of Guarantee,

Considering therefore that the attempt to create a "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" is invalid, and will contribute to a worsening of the situation in Cyprus,

Reaffirming its resolutions 365(1974) and 367(1975),

Aware of the need of a solution to the Cyprus problem, based on the mission of good offices undertaken by the Secretary-General,

Affirming its continued support for the United Nations Peace- keeping Force in Cyprus,

Taking note of the Secretary-Generals statement of 17 November 1983,

1. Deplores the declaration of the Turkish Cypriot authorities of the purported secession of part of the Republic of Cyprus;

2. Considers the declaration refereed to above as legally invalid and calls for its withdrawal;

3. Calls for the urgent and effective implementation of its resolutions 365(1974) and 367(1975);

4. Requests the Secretary-General to peruse his mission of good offices in order to achieve the earliest possible progress towards a just and lasting settlement in Cyprus;

5. Calls upon the parties to co-operate with the Secretary- General in his mission of good offices;

6. Calls upon all states to respect the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and non-alignment of the Republic of Cyprus;

7. Calls upon all states not to recognise any Cypriot state other than the Republic of Cyprus;

8. Calls upon all states and the two communities in Cyprus to refrain from any action which might exacerbate the situation;

9. Requests the Secretary-General to keep the Security Council fully informed.

RESOLUTION 550 (1984)

Adopted by the Security Council
on 11 May 1984

The Security Council,

Having considered the situation in Cyprus at the request of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus,

Having heard the statement made by the President of the Republic of Cyprus,

Taking note of the report of the Secretary General (S/16519),

Recalling its resolutions 365(1974), 367(1975), 541(1983) and 544(1983),

Deeply regretting the non-implementation of its resolutions, in particular resolution 541(1983),

Gravely concerned about the further secessionist acts in the occupied part of the Republic of Cyprus which are in violation of Resolution 541(1983), namely the purported "exchange of Ambassadors" between Turkey and the legally invalid "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" and the contemplated holding of a "constitutional referendum" and "elections", as well as by other actions aimed at further consolidating the purported independent state and the division of Cyprus,

Deeply concerned about recent threats for settlement of Varosha by people other than its inhabitants,

Reaffirms its support for the United Nations Peace-Keeping Force in Cyprus,

1. Reaffirming its resolution 541(1983) and calls for its urgent and effective implementation;

2. Condemns all secessionist actions, including the purported exchange of Ambassadors between Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot Leadership, declares them illegal and invalid and calls for their immediate withdrawal;

3. Reaffirms the call upon all States not to recognise the purported state of the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" set up by secessionist acts and calls upon them not to facilitate or in any way assist this the aforesaid secessionist entity;

4. Calls upon all States to respect the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, unity and non-alignment of the Republic of Cyprus;

5. Considers attempts to settle any part of Varosha by people other than its inhabitants as inadmissible and calls for the transfer of this area to the administration of the United Nations;

6. Considers any attempts to interfere with the status or the deployment of the United Nations Peace-Keeping Force in Cyprus as country to the resolutions of the United Nations;

7. Requests the Secretary General to promote the urgent implementation of Security Council resolution 541(1983);

8. Reaffirms its mandate of good offices given to the Secretary General and requests him to undertake new efforts to attain an overall solution to the Cyprus problem in conformity with the principles of the Charter of The United Nations and the provisions for such a settlement laid down in the pertinent United Nations resolutions, including Security Council resolution 541(1983) and the present resolution;

9. Calls upon all parties to co-operate with the Secretary General in his mission of good offices;

10. Decides to remain seized of the situation with a view to taking urgent and appropriate measures in the event of non-implementation of its resolution 541(1983) and the present resolution;

11. Requests the Secretary General to promote the implementation of the resolution and to report thereon to the Security Council as developments require.
