FWIW, I have to disagree with Spetz, who seems to characterize the island as a slum. Most people have been quite good to me and my wife, and I've had very little issue with the roads. There's much more to do (ancient ruins, monasteries, mountains, museums, etc) than just the beach if you can arse a little action out of yourself. I've certainly never felt ripped off by hotels or car rentals or even in bars. Kikapu is right - prices for most 'things' in Cyprus are on a par with most other holiday destinations.
That said, what I think is off putting to tourists is the fact that the traditional Cypriot hospitality seems to be waning. Possibly due to EU policies. Restaurants and hotels, etc now have to hire from a pool of European unemployed folks, if I'm not mistaken, tom some degree. So you wind up with some waiters, waitresses, etc from abroad that may not want to be there, have no idea what they're doing and neither do they care. I'm not trying to make a generalization here as it's not the majority of cases, but seems to be increasing.
Last time I was there (2005), my wife and I struck up conversation with an Irish family who were disappointed and mentioned they wouldn't come back for the reasons immediately above. They weren't made to feel as welcome as in the past, and that's a shame. |

Dinos, I guess it depends with what you get used to...
But really, there are empty fields with rubbish and weeds, the roads are very bumpy, narrow, have holes in them, and there are construction sites everywhere with building materials on the road.
Sure, these are just the negatives, but they, at least to me, make a huge impact on my view of Cyprus.
I believe it could be much more civilized than it is. Not to mention there are some very rude people as well
Of course, like mentioned in my other post, this is just a quick opinion I have gathered without any sort of solid basis |

There are contradictions, the areas of wasteland are there but there are also really lovely landscaped areas in unexpected places such as in the middle of roundabouts or on verges.
Limassol is a mess but mainly because so much work is being done on the highway and other areas.
My parents were there for the first time a few weeks ago and loved it - the people, food, atmosphere etc.
The tourist areas are way too pricey but aren't they all, no matter which country?
It's worth a visit at least but do find out about places to visit before you go. |

GG you can't base everyone's opinions on what is said on this forum. There are exceptionally negative and outspoken members here that are not representative of most people in Cyprus. Just come and have a glass of wine with me and forget the rest! |

GorillaGal, I hate America with a passion, but I think most of the world does
That doesn't mean I would be rude to you, or wouldn't befriend you
Unless you were the the stereotypical arrogant, ignorant American citizen |
