Kikapu; I am sure you would not want to be on the receiving end of this behaiviour by those enforcers of the "law". I see your point, but I think it was more humiliating than anything else. I hate the softly softly approach, but where you have capital punishment or a brutal prison regime does not ended violent crime murder etc. Not making excuses for the policemen, they must have been incensed at the crime commited.

As Eliko says;
I think a comparison in crime figures between the U.K. and Greece, will inject a little realism into your 'Cliche', it is perfectly obvious that the 'softly softly' approach has only added to the problems endemic in the U.K.

Do you not find it a little hypocritical that nations (such as the U.K. and others) expound the virtues of leniency on one hand, yet are able to perpetrate the horrors in Iraq?.

I would rather see lessons taught by example, the youngsters of today have nothing to respect.

alexISS, how then would you deal with the two young thugs who mugged the old lady?. Question

I would lock them in the police station's jail. Beating them will not prevent them from repeating the crime, they may as well kill their next victim to make sure the police does not get their descriptions

Rubbish, it is far more likely they will just not re-offend. Murder will get them a life-sentence, rather than a few slaps.

By the way, Prison does not work. Just ask the UK. We have nowhere left to put them all; 50% of all released prisoners re-offend within 2 years.

alexISS, I consider that a very weak argument, if the young thugs receive a good thrashing, they will probably run a mile the next time they see an old lady with a shopping bag.

There is one other point I would like to make in dealing with young offenders, I think the authorities are overly concerned with stigmatizing them, they are so concerned with labelling them and getting their names into the record books, finger-printed etc, this process only encourages the youngsters to compare notes with each other, it is tantamount to giving them a 'Badge of Acceptance' among their peers.

A good whacking and a sore arse is nothing to boast about, let them have it and go home un-stigmatized, they will respect THAT kind of leniency more I'll warrant.

Turkish Cypriot, that is what i am talking about.

It was a big story in Greece the past weeks. It is a true opportunity to see how democratic Greece is.

Greece is the same shit like Turkey,If not worse.
The fact that we are 30 years in the EU mean nothing about our human rights records.

I say take Greece to the EU courts at the first instance,so as this shit behaviour stops.
Specially with Albanians,Greece doesnt play the soft guy....Enjoy Greece's ridicule....

What is rubbish is leaving the punishment of the offender to the judgment of a low rank policeman. Should we turn all the police stations into torture chambers? Beating the offender does NOT work, if I was beaten by someone (and had a criminal nature) I would most probably seek "revenge" rather than avoid repeating the crime that lead to my beating

Ah, sure. But would you like YOUR CHILDREN to be whacked by an illiterate, brutal, probably corrupt policeman? And what if it turned out that your children did nothing wrong? Where would you want to see that policeman end up?

Hey AlexISS, what IS that you are smoking in your avatar?, are you now suggesting that police forces should be manned by 'illiterate, brutal and corrupt policemen', the first duty of the police is to protect the general public, if there are problems among the ranks of the officers, it is their duty to eradicate them.

I am amazed that you should venture such a statement in support of your opinion.
