My mom came to the U.S. in the late 50's on the Queen Mary. She would like to see Cyprus, but she won't board any planes. We live in Arcadia, California. She got to L.A. by car, but that was 50 years ago. She's taken a train across the U.S., but I don't think she'll travel by car or by train more than a day. She hasn't seen Cyprus in 50 years. Is there a practical way to get there on a ship from Los Angeles, California? She'll sleep on a ship, but we're pretty far away from Cyprus, of course.........Estelle Langis, Arcadia

Take your elderly mother to Long Beach and show her that the Queen Mary is all tied up to the Docks, and has become a Floating Hotel, and that there's no way she can go back to Europe on her and that flying is the only way, otherwise you will need to take the train from LA to New York and stay in a Hotel each night. That will take easy 6 days, and then you can put her on the Cruise liner for another 4-5 days to Europe, then more train and Hotels all the way to Greece, then another boat ride to Cyprus.

All in all, she should reach Cyprus by the time she turns 84. Laughing

now that just sounds like part of a movie. i've been on the queen mary a few months ago for lunch and its still in good shape hehe

in any case, theres cruises from long beach that port in italy. she can catch a short flight from there, or another boat to greece and then cyprus

best flight to get is LAX-LHR(10hrs) and LHR-LCA. (4hrs)

i've done it (from San fran but same flight) last month. not so bad with sleeping pills.

let me warn you though, she wont be going back

At that age anything other than plane would be very tiring so I wouldn' risk it!

Bless her. Anything other than a plane would be very impractical. I suggest you try talking her into it a bit more, and book her a business class seat to ensure she's comfortable during the flight. Planes these days are very safe, chances of any kind of accident are almost non existant. Security is tighter than ever, and a flight to Cyprus would be rather low-threat anyway, should you find a direct one. Good luck, and I wish her all the best.
