I know one man who has been inside the city, crawled past the UN and Turkish guarfds seceral times to go to his house to recover some important papers he had hidden there.

His descriptions of hownature reclaims a man made environment are fascinating. The place is crawling with insects, rodents, reptiles and lots of feral cats and dogs. Trees and shrubs are growing through the cracks n the streets. It sounds fascinating froma biological and ecological point of view.

Greekster, most former inhabitants of Famagusta are very much alive, well I hope so, I am one of them!

The deal for Varosha was for a while the offer to return the city if the Republic of Cyprus would give its approval to the unconditional opening of the Famagusta port under the control of the Turkish Cypriot administration. The counter offer was to have both port and city opened under UN control. Result- no deal. But both sides' business communities know the full meaning of opening the city for rebuilding and are pushing to get some kind of deal going. Just imagine that sums equal to five annual budgets of the Republic will be spent on a rebuild! There is enough work in Famagusta to keep all Turkish Cypriot architects, builders, contractors etc occupied for ten years they would be getting the major part of the building pie anyway. And they wont have to lay down even one Euro in capital nor return any territory since Famagusta is closed anyhow. The dumb schmucks who lost the city will be given loans to rebuild it. Ah Famagusta!

Thanks Nikitas
That what was crossing my mind when looking in from outside . In certain places the fences look so easy to get past if you put your mind to it . I am NOT suggesting for a moment that anyone should do this because of the obvious dangers but as you say I find it fascinating what it must be like in there after so long .

Did any protest go on near varosha? If you think about it, a lot of people could protest (nonviolently) and sit right in front of that fence. I mean I know major news organizations in the USA would pick it up, i mean they will air something like this instead of Iraq all the time.

Has the north ever came to try and make a deal like, i'll give you varosha for x? And if they did what was the deal?

I think one of the deals involved 'recognition ' of the TRNC. Tha was not and will not be forthcoming so there it stands.
I cant remember what else was on the table except a cup of Cyprus coffee a bottle of Keo beer and Cyprus delight

Famagusta, even as a dead city, still helping its own citizens- Its show to the World and particularly the high salary politicians in Eu how Eu will be when Turks enter (if this ever happen) in.

On the contrary, it shows your unwillingness to compromise for the sake of propaganda. We all know that you(Pl) are masters of it. You could have had a long time ago.

Greekster

There have been several major protests at the case fire line near Varosha. The international media gave it a few seconds, but that did no change much. The prize is just too big to let it go.

DA when was Varosha offered and in return for what? Part of the Varosha city was offered in the Annan plan, about a third would remain under Turkish Cypriot control. Other than these two "offers" I have not seen any others and as a Fmagustian, or Varoshiotis if you like that better, I keep an eye out on new about my city.

The keeping of 40 000 people away from their homes is a unique act of cruelty that even the Nazis did not commit in World War II. How can that act be construed as propaganda by the Greek Cypriot side, do you understand what you are saying?

This whole conflict makes no sense, i mean why should Cyprus even listen to the UN? I mean 35 years and Cyprus is in the same place, yet when you see diamonds being smuggled out of Africa the UN is the first one there.
