I am interested in the viewpoints of the forum members regarding the elections in Greece. I take it Karamanlis and Papandreou are very close in this race. Do you think the recent fires have any impact on people`s stance regarding the existing government? Thanks.

Nope..people know the fires were provocations, and only the existing government was NOT responsible..Hopefully Karamanlis will be the winner again.. Smile

Fires happen every year in Greece, the difference this year was the extent and the human cacualties. So the fires had very little impact on the elections.

Results just announced show New Democracy winning with 153 seats in Parliament, out of a total 300 seats. Back to business as usual tomorrow morning.

Cyprus was not mentioned once by any of the five parties that won seats in the new parliament at any political discussion/debate/ pre election programme.

That's not true, Greece's assistance to the EU accession of Cyprus was mentioned many times by George Papandreou as one of his "highlights" as foreign minister. Also the Annan plan and its acceptance by the big parties was repeatedly mentioned and criticized by the LAOS and DIANA presidents. Other than that, since PASOK and ND basically have the same positions regarding the Cyprus problem, there was no debate between them over it
