Turban protocol" in Northern Cyprus for Hayrunnisa Gul



President Abdullah Gul and his wife, Hayrunnisa Gul, arrived in Northern Cyprus (KKTC) yesterday for a two day visit as a the guests of KKTC President Mehmet Ali Talat and his wife, Oya Talat. Under intense media scrutiny due to the headscarf or "turban" that she wears, Hayrunnisa Gul was not included in official protocol, with a "special protocol" instead being implemented to accomodate her presence on the official visit.

According to normal protocol, a military ceremony should have taken place at Northern Cyprus' Ercan Airport, but yesterday no such ceremony took place when President Gul landed. Instead, the military ceremony which occured took place later in Nicosia, at the official offices of President Talat.

After arriving, Hayrunnisa Gul was met by Oya Talat, and split off from the official delegation. The two women and their delegations visited Girne, from which they left to take a tour of the famous Bellepais Monastery. In the evening, an iftar dinner held by President Gul in honor of President Talat was also noticeably not inclusive of spouses; it was also attended by top ranked members of the Northern Cypriot military. Today too, Hayrunnisa Gul will not be included in the official protocol; instead, Turkey's new "First Lady" will tour historical spots around Girne, taking time to stop off at an orphanage in Nicosia.

This is mad. I can't believe she cannot wear what she wants and be treated as the wife of the country's president. That is discrimination at its best.

Sorry but she shouldnt be allowed to wear that.... North cyprus is modern country and no cypriot wears that and very few turkish who live here wears it - she shouldnt be allowed to wear it! She should respect the culture of this country.

Sorry to say this but you are talking crap....This has nothing to do with north Cyprus being modern..I am not religious at all...but i dont think any one has the right to decide what people should wear or not....not even the army!!!
I think the army is being very stupid with this turban stance they took against the presidents wife..They have to learn to live with the fact that she happens to be the wife of their president who was democratically elected by the Turkish nation.....full stop..

You could be be against the idea of wearing a turban,but you dont have the right to dictate what other people should wear or not..
You have to learn to respect other peoples beliefs and way of life..
I did not say there is anything wrong with wearing a mini skirt...I only used that as an example because you said turban was disrespectful...If any dress code is going to be classified as disrespectful in a muslim country (specially during Ramazan) would be a mini skirt not turban..

I think the point is being missed here. This is the flexing of muscle between the religious and secular. As simple as that and in the present circumstances the headgear should not have been warn. The religious undertones are there for all to see. It would have been a good opportunity for her not to wear the headscarf and show us that the religious freaks are not taking over....It has shown us the reality though...

The president of the Indian Republic ears a turban I believe. If he ever visits Turkey are they going to ask him to leave his turban behind because it is a religious symbol? This head scarf thing is getting a little strange.
