any luck finding badminton courts

Postby carrie » Sun Nov 18, 2007 3:46 am

Hi Lena
Did you have any luck with asking your friend about badminton courts in paphos area. Coming over on tuesday and hoping to bring my raquets. Its not looking very hopeful eh. Maybe I should bring a skipping rope and keep fit on the verandah....but so boring :-)) Do you think I should have posted this in the sports section of the forum....I'm new to this. Carrie

Hi Carrie

Luis Phaeton Hotel site says they have 2 courts. You have to call them and ask them if you have to be a resident guest to play there or if anyone can hire a court.

here's the link:

Thanks so much Kafenes. I'll get my friend to go down and ask, and keep my fingers crossed, so that I know whether to bring raquets....I'm packing right at this moment....can't wait to leave the grey skies behind for a few weeks. They might be like some of our hotel leisure clubs here and have a membership for non guests...who knows....maybe a badminton club in the making? Does anyone know if its a a popular game in cyprus....I guess in UK folks get introduced to it in school and I have no idea what sports facilities are like for school kids. All I know is every village seems to have a football stadium. I've searched on the web and found there is a cyprus association (or federation) of badminton but can't get more than that....not that I'm up to world standard (either with badminton or the computer:-))

Carrie I send you a pm the other day. Unfortunately my friend did not know any court and to be honest with my other friend who used to play in National team of badminton and he knows for sure we lost contact now i am in UK.

Yes there is badminton federation and they are quite organized and achieved a lot at least few years ago that I followed the sport for fun.

What exactly do you want. what are you looking for?

Lena
Thanks for that. What exactly do I want? We (me and my husband)used to play league badminton but stopped playing about 10 years ago. I guess work and life got in the way,,,,big mistake as I lost my fitness quite quickly. Over rhe last couple of years realised I must do something to improve my fitness so have tried all the usual gym, jog etc.....ugk boring.

Was talking to a fitness person who pointed out that I'm no spring chicken any more...very true... and we can play badminton however old we get as the skill balances out the declining fitness. Also apparently if you have done something in the past...the body holds a muscle memory and its much easier to get fit again doing what is familiar

So we started playing again about 6 months ago....just the two of us, hiring a court and all this seems to have been good advice and we've really enjoyed it. We've recently gone back to our old club ...and didn't disgrace ourselves!!

So basically we just want to maintain it whether we're here or in cyprus. So the two of us can hire a court or hire a court with a couple of friends or join a club if it exists.

K has suggested Louis Phaeton hotel might be worth checking out and our friends in paphos are checking it out.

Carrie I am really sorry if my what do you want sounded a bit weird.

Yes I understand where you are coming from. By the way the easier thing is to lose your weight balance and fitness and the hard part is to get them back to normal.

when I ask what do you want it was like if you want any information about the badminton federation!

As for badminton group there are in Larnaka, Limassol and Nicosia which is the federation and the National teams.

Badminton is very tough! Good luck with that. All the best from me and let me know if i can help with any other way

Carrie

If you are still around the Paphos area from January onwards, I would be interested in joining any badminton groupings.

I used to play for Uni (not league), a long time ago, but stopped for all the same reasons you mention. I was really passionate about it and it's much more satisfying than tennis or squash (although these are still great).

Thanks lena and hi phoenix. will be in cyprus until boxing day but we are there every second month as I do some work in UK and some from Cyprus....so will be back again february. Will let you know what we find and please do join in...we'll form our own club for fun...its really good if you can know, for instance that the court is booked for a certain night and anyone who wants to can come along...or not if they have something else. I've just heard from my friends in cyprus who are also keen to play. They phoned the LP hotel and the receptionist didn't even know what badminton was:-))....so they're going to call in. Maybe you can ask around for possibilities as well

Yes phoenix. Start getting fit in readiness.its amusing that when we recently inquired about returning to another club we used to play with...we found out that it was now called the phoenix badminton club :-)). You know arising out of the old one...seems when we stopped 10 years ago so had most of the others and then got together again. Maybe we can start a paphos club....any suggestions from anybody for a name??
