Something constructive maybe?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Something constructive maybe?

Postby Aris » Tue Mar 16, 2004 12:18 am

The last days I see that most threads turn into a conflict. Sometimes the forum’s rules are violated since some people do not seem to understand what "Personal attacks are not allowed" means. I have not edited any posts yet and I did not implement any word filters, with the hope that this will not continue.

The Annan plan discussions seem to create too many conflicts, so maybe we should leave it in the background for a while.

What I would like to know, to put your views into perspective, is who you are, and how you dream your future. While this might seem irrelevant to the Cyprus problem I think it is not. To make it a bit more interesting (and relevant), please put the following concepts in order of importance starting with what is more important for you and ending with the least important.

Democracy
Your human rights
Other people human rights
Equality (of people)
Equality (of communities)
Pride
Power (personal)
Money
Personal success
Security
Friendship

I know many things can be viewed as directly related (e.g that you cannot have power without money) but try to view them separately (e.g. you could have lots of money but not much power, or lots of power without lots of money).

Please try to stay away from the Annan plan in this thread.

Who I am:
-Male
-Greek Cypriot – non-refugee from Limassol
-I am moderate socialist. I believe that the state should make sure that all of its citizens have the necessary for a decent life and access to good quality of health and education services. At the same time, competition should be encouraged and protected and the state should not control its citizens.
-I am about to start my own business.

Future dreams:
- Me and my family to have a long healthy life
- Love and be loved
- Be recognized for my abilities
- Travel more
- Being even more proud for Cyprus.

I will put the terms into order but I will also give them a grade from 0 to 10 so their relative importance can be shown.

Security 10
My human rights 10
Personal success 9
Other people human rights 9
Pride 9
Democracy 9
Equality (of people) 8*
Money 5
Power 5
Friendship 5
Equality (of communities) 0

*This would be more if you mean political equality, and less if you mean the kind of equality that communism means.

I am about to start my own business.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of a business are you thinking of? Because you said you have a degree in Comp.Sci., I'm a CS person as well, maybe we can start a "bicommunal" business :-)

constructive maybe yes

Postby tcypriot » Tue Mar 16, 2004 8:07 pm

First of all for a constructive argument some people must learn at least to be able to understand what the other says.Piratis :eyecrazy: read my post again then reply back because you either did not or could not understand what i wrote.

Also piratis and his kind whenever you start thinking that we turkishcypriots are not one of the two majorities of the island take a look at the money in your wallet..

tcypriot,
In this thread I reminded you of the forum rules about personal attacks and in this very same thread you come and made one such attack.
Such attacks create a hostile environment and can lead only to conflicts and never to understanding.
In addition, such arguments are false by nature since they commit the fallacy of Argumentum ad Hominem (Argument against the Person): An ad hominem argument is a fallacy that involves replying to an argument or assertion by attempting to discredit the person offering the argument or assertion.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad_hominem

I can accept any kind of views, but I hope that nobody is trying to create conflict intentionally. If you disagree with something said then you can freely express your opinion. If you believe that your knowledge/abilities are not enough to challenge the views of somebody else then simply do not reply or at least reply in a more polite way.

Also, I noticed that many threads end up way off topic. There is a difference between chatting online and using a forum like this. One thread – one topic. I know some times it is hard to keep it like this, but you can try. Or at least use the General chat forum where things can be more relaxed in this respect.

This is the last time I will not edit posts like the above. There are 10000s of forums online and I am sure you can go and post there if you want to express your views in this way.

Please do not reply to the post above. If you want to reply to the topic of this thread or something very relevant then go ahead, otherwise just move on to something else.

Here its my ranking to all these factors stated above:

Democracy
Security
Equality of communities
Equality of people

My human rights
Other people human rights.
Personal success
friendship

Money
Pride
Power (personal)

I consider the above in bold type as very important , in italic type important and those with normal type as not that important.

I would like to see my country united functioning as an Indpependent Sovereign country with strong cypriot identity and without any direct dependance from Greece and Turkey.

What is more in financial aspects i would like to see cyprus propsering like the Western european countries at least or even exceeding their progress.
