I do not intend this to be a Cyprus-bashing post, so please do not interpret it as such.

Cyprus must be the only independent country in the world that celebrates the national holidays of a foreign country and flies a foreign country's flag more than its own. Is this not a peculiar situation?

Could you imagine the USA flying the UK Union flag more than the Stars and Stripes or celebrating St George's Day or Guy Fawkes' Day, rather than or in addition to 4 July, because the UK was the source of their cultural heritage?

The 82% of Cypriots are Greek. Therefore something Greek is not foreign for Greek Cypriots.

The difference between US/UK and Cyprus/Greece is that the majority of Americans wanted to be independent from the UK and they fought for this. In Cyprus the great majority wanted union with Greece, but outside forces didn't allow it.

I won't discuss what you mean by "Greek'. Are you not proud of being Cypriot, first and foremost? Even a Scotsman is a Scot first and British second (and NEVER English!). To us foreigners, it looks as if you are subjugating your own identity, which is something to be proud of.

Oh yes, I know all about the Enosis movement and the history of it, but ...

Of course I am proud to be Cypriot. And I am proud to be a limassolian as well. And we are first and above all Cypriots.

However, we are Greek Cypriots, and being Greek is part of our identity as well. I don't think we need to hide this, but on the other hand I don't think we need to over emphasize it either. Probably you are right that it is overdone in some cases.
