Weldone, it just shows it can be done. Ignoring is the key, people do tend to talk down to you because you are different and difference must always be wrong in a narrow mind. It's silly difference is good. It adds diversity. |
I think we all have some accurate conceptions of Cyprus, I'm 100 % british with a half Greek Cypriot wife, work for a large company where only about 10% speak my language.. I'm embarrassed I can't speak greek that well, and initially they gave me a hard time, 1 year has now passed and the attitudes have changed for the better. But you do have to be strong, and stick with it. Grab the bull by the horns, a good kick in the danglies..... and hold on. |

| in response to the subject of jobs and opportunities here, i am british cypriot, never learned to speak greek fluently, moved to cyprus from london about 5 yrs ago. Started my own business and now publish Cyprus' 1st contemporary arts magazine. I ve managed to do this despite speaking much greek, which has made it 100 times tougher, plus the arts are lacking in support and appreciation here, but it IS possible to succeed professionally if you are willing to put in the effort and prepared to ignore the cypriot narrow mindedness. that's a good post
lot of good points
very true about narrow-mindedness out here. you have to lead by example and show them the right way. only then will you open their eyes to the possibilities.
whats the name of your magazine ? i would be interested to have a look.
and congratulations, it seems you have done something special |

its ARTERI magazine, published in Greek,Turkish, english.... check out my website link. Can find it at larger kiosks, kyriakou, moufflon book shops...
I think you have to be very strong willed, slightly insane, and need to persist to succeed here, same anywhere i suppose. But harder in a smaller place, with history, where things tend to take forever, and when youre doing something new and progressive its even more of a struggle , but its all well worth the effort. |
