Talat wins , though most reports I saw were predicting 60-65% support for him and he got 55% ish.

They hope Turkey will be forced to make further concessions on Cyprus before it can begin EU accession negotiations in October.

My oh my, a foreign nation having to make concessions on the reunification of a sovereign republic. Who has heard of such ludicrous things in today's world?

Is the TC press saying why this was the case? Nothing in English on this so far. What % did Eroğlu win?

Talat is the winner of the presidential elections
Ankara Anatolia news agency (17.04.05) reports from occupied Lefkosia that Mehmet Ali Talat, the current Prime Minister won the presidential elections in the occupied areas of Cyprus, according to the preliminary results of the votes.

Mr Talat won 55.6 percent of votes counted, while his main rival Mr Dervis Eroglu, the leader of the (main opposition) National Unity Party (NUP), gained only 22.73 percent.

Below is the distribution of votes:

Mehmet Ali Talat: 55.6 %
Dervis Eroglu: 22.73 %
Mustafa Arabacioglu: 13.22 %
Nuri Cevikel: 4.79 %
Zeki Besiktepeli: 1.72 %
Huseyin Angolemli: 1.05 %
Zehra Cengiz: 0.44 %
Arif Salih Kirdag: 0.30 %
Ayhan Kaymak: 0.17 %

The participation in this presidential elections was 69.58 percent and this was the lowest rate since 1976.

Interesting stuff bro', thanks for that... it looks like quite a number of the votes expected for Talat were given to the DP candidate instead, Eroğlu's % was much as expected anyway... that's what you get for trying to look like Don King Dervis!

Also interesting news about the turn-out, looks like there were a lot of people who either felt that the result was a foregone conclusion and would rather spend their Sunday relaxing rather than voting, or that a lot of people felt that no candidates reflected their views and therefore expressed their opinion by not voting. I was reading an article on Turkish Daily News that embodied this last view.

What is your take on the turnout issue?

P.S. Although low in Cypriot terms, I think Tony Blair would kill for a turnout of almost 70% come May 5th Laughing

P.P.S. In TC elections, it's always interesting to look at the regional break-down as well since you tend to get wide variations where you have concentrations of Turkish citizens from the mainland. Any sign of these? If they're in Turkish, that's fine as stats are easy to read regardless.
