Continuing on the ethological theme of common characteristics adapted to the environment as memes or behavioural traits which are not genetically or racially determined, but cultural habits, which distinguish government-led groups of people such as Turks and Cypriots .... we can draw some parallels from our closest relatives the Chimp and Bonobo.

These two apes are genetically similar, yet so different in habits. These habits have helped make one more abundant ..... the Chimp (like Turks) occupies a wider habitat range than the more docile, less aggressive, non-invasive Bonobo (like Cypriots).

The Bonobo lives in a more matriarchal society, with less domineering warmongering males taking charge (c.f. Turkish Military inspired Turkey).

They have been the focus of much study as behavioural scientists try to find ways to ameliorate the more aggressive elements prevalent in some expansionist nations (e.g. Turkey).

By manipulating the environment, ethologists can make the apes less aggressive.

At the root of the Cyprus Problem is naked aggression; so it is comforting to note that this behaviour can be teased out of everyday habits.

An abridged version of an article to familiarise further the concept of our cousins' behaviour and its mirroring by us ....

Quote:
Bonobos are docile less aggressive or murderous, and possess many of the psychological traits we value most, including altruism, compassion, empathy, kindness, patience and sensitivity.

Today our human world is characterised by war, oppression and terror.

Common chimps also have a reputation for aggression and bloodshed.

The Bonobo

Can they teach us to be more tolerant? What would it take to turn on our inner bonobo?

Nobody has been able to put their finger on exactly what makes this ape so different. What is becoming clear now though is that its behaviour is influenced less by its nature - the genes - and more by its environment, culture and learning. What bonobos eat, how they structure their social interactions, and their ability to pass on certain psychological attitudes from one generation to another all seem to play a part. That being so, there may indeed be lessons we can draw about how to make human society more peaceable.

At most, there are a few hundred thousand bonobos left in the wild.

…. On the face of it, their habitat looks very similar to a chimpanzee's, although the latter are much more widely distributed. The habits of the two species couldn't be more different, though.

Put bluntly, bonobos are nice because the environment they live in is nice.

….. but studies at zoos do indicate that chimpanzees flexibly adjust to new environments and are capable of holding their aggression in check.

[Studies of other primates (Baboons) also show they can quickly learn to be more or less aggressive as their environment changes. Removal of aggressive males led to the appearance of a passive culture.]

Quote:
..... if aggression works, any animal will use it. "It isn't an inherited characteristic," Hohmann says. The converse is also true. "With the bonobos, team work currently pays off, violence does not. If their environment were to change, so too would their behaviours."

Where does this leave humans? As primates ourselves are we slaves to our environment or can we rise above it? "Our environment does shape our inner ape," argues de Waal. "We can cooperate like the bonobos and be competitive like the chimps,

…..Yet we have a remarkable capacity for peaceful cooperation not just in our daily dealings with each other but also in international organisations - consider, for instance, the ideas upon which the United Nations was founded.

Oracle, I would like to "advice" you, from now on, to reserve your posts for only outside the Cyprus problem areas of the forum. There is the "general chat" section, the "jokes and enigmas" section and the "meet new people" section, and you can write whatever you wish there!

The reason I "ask" you to do this, is because you have unfortunately proven yourself to be completely inapt and unfit to post anything in the Cyprus problem section, and as a result, you defeat and effectively destroy whatever messages all the rest of the GCs are trying to send!

If you do not wish to follow this "advice," I have to let you know that you will unfortunately find your self on the wrong end of Kifeas wrath!

I hope whatever I have said above was quite intelligible for you, and that I will not have to repeat it again! Thank you in advance, for your understanding!

These collective cryptic messages that meet with your approval, dear scholar of Kemalism, might as well be sent as smoke-signals for all the weight they carry.

A messenger, I myself am not and your bidding I don't do!

My central theme, to counteract the "genetic racism" underpinning the Cyprus problem, as manifest in ethnic cleansing, and lay us bare as creatures of habit and behaviour, traits, which instead can be modified at Will and through instruction; can indeed have wider applicability in all threads and sections.

But you would do well to follow your own instructions, on the messages you send, if every post you make is filled with wisdom and insight, then god help us all! Shocked

BTW .... whilst I have your (unwanted) attention ..... stop offering bits of my country to VP ...... Not 18%; not 17% ...... ZERO percent!

Anathema to your wrath! Razz

Well since you have so far this morning demonstrated an inability to use "then" and "than" correctly, and a complete failure to grasp the fact that Humans are classified as Great Apes, is there really any point in my trying to get to the bottom of your confusion regarding the theme which you have highlighted? (not cut and pasted apart from NS article, I take full responsibility for that part of the thread! Laughing ).

Ethologists can manipulate environments to alter the behaviour of the Apes under study.
So if we improve our environment by removing aggressive elements, we are less likely to "war" with each other. Cyprus problem solved!
There, simple enough for you? Rolling Eyes

If you believe that "fact" then you are an animal.

Nowhere near, not even slightly warm little sock-puppet.

Tell me, what "aggressive elements" need removing?
