"Aliens who are married to Cypriot citizens are entitled to apply for Cypriot citizenship, after completing three years of marriage and cohabitation with their Cypriot spouse. The marriage certificate, good character certificate, the birth certificate of the applicant and particulars of the Cypriot spouse (i.e. copy of Cyprus passport) are required. Also a certificate issued by the Chairman of Communal Council (Muhtar) stating that that two spouses have been living continuously in his sector for at least two years immediately prior to the date of their application, should be provided. The applicant must be legally residing in Cyprus. The application must be submitted on form M125 (in duplicate)."

Good luck to all that have to deal with the muhtars. Bring plenty of Geritol. And hope his memory goes back 3 years.    (This is going to bite me on the ass at some point.)

Seriously, I figured the muhtar system would've been done away with by now.

I disagree. We are obliged to preserve our Ottoman traditions. Period! 8)

It is all very simple. if you don't want to do your time in the National Guard, you get a psychiatrist to declare you as a "nutter".

Something like 24% of conscripts do this including the son of the leader of "EVROKO" even though his dad wasn't very happy about it (in public anyway)!

My cousin was born in the UK and lived here all his life (he's 30 years old) and his parents are both Greek Cypriots. He is now thinking of moving to Cyprus.

Under the official policy, he would have to serve 3 months military service, but he is a bit worried as he suffers from clinical depression and anxiety attacks. He has to take medication that also has some side effects, and has had this condition for about 15 years. He can get letters from his doctor to prove this and it's not just some excuse to 'dodge the draft'.

Does anyone know if this would make him exempt from military service? If not, how does the army deal with his condition?

Also, if he is exempt, what do the discharge certificates say? Do they mention specific reasons for discharge? For example, 'unfit for duty' is fair enough, but do they put 'mentally unfit?' That would hardly be fair, as though depression is a mental condition, he's not 'insane'.

Obviously there is no point in him going to Cyprus if he is going to end up with a certificate that says he is 'mentally unstable', as no employer will give him a chance.

To be honest, I don't think he would be much use to them, especially given that he only has to serve 3 months. It doesn't seem like it would be worth their time and resources to deal with an unfit depressed 30-year-old with limited Greek language skills who will be gone in three months.

he most likely wont need to do army now..

My old man had to do national service, but it was here in GB in the late '50. The worst time for a Cy to be associated with the GB army. Fortunately, after a few weeks, he came across a sympathetic army doctor who declared him unfit for some reason or another and he was discharged.

You do realise of course that you're leaving yourself wide open here for attack... ...which I for one won't be doing... Image

The obligation commences in the year the person becomes 18 and continues to the year of his 50th birthday.

How can they drag someone in to do military service if he doesn't have Cypriot citizenship? This policy doesn't seem right considering this person is a UK citizen.

my son also received 'anastoli' for three consecutive years and after the three years we thought that he fulfilled
his duties as he was considered unfit for service by the panel of medical officers. He suffers from depression and anxiety attacks. We are now permanently living in the UK and we received messages from the army through my father that my son should have reported for a medical examination in July! We wrote to them explaining that the health situation is still the same and that we are no longer living in Cyprus and they say that he still needs to fly to Cyprus each year and until he is 40 year old for examination. This doesnt make sense - any advice?
