Travelling to the North by hire car

Postby Leon » Thu Jul 10, 2008 6:12 pm

I haven't yet been to the North but we have many, many relatives over from England and Canada and I have been told that it isn't possible to travel from the South to the North by hire car. Is this information true?

Also, is there any information on going to the North by passing through Ledra Street?

Thank you in advance.

Leon.

It can and is done Leon, but your southern hire company will tell you that it is done at your own risk for any damage to their car. The southern insurance does not cover the Occupied North. The northern occupation authorities will compel you to take out some kind of third party insurance at the border, which I believe limits the northern insurers to paying out for damage to property and persons in the north but not to yourselves and the hire car.

Done it a couple of times without any problems whatsoever but I have always been aware of the consequences if the car is damaged in the north. I have always told the southern hire company of my intention.

I have been looking into this also for our trip next month and have been told that Petsas car hire allow you to take their cars into the North but you must tell them what you intend to do and they will sort the appropriate insurance. Many car hire companies do not allow you to take cars into the north. Strange isnt it. Anyway good luck.

insurance here is not the same as in the uk or eu. you get third party of full comp only. most people get third party cos the cost of full comp is massive. why not drive to nicosia and walkthrough at ledra. just like to add that on entering the roc we are also only offered third party.

Leon ,

best for you is pass from leadra palace check point .
from check point your relatives can get you very easily . to park their cars is very easy . next to check point there is a car park .they can park and wait for you at check point .they will pay around 2 euro for car park .

another check point is in old Nicosia called Ledra street or Lokmaci .
they can collect you from there as well but parking places are more away from Lokmaci .Around Lokmaci you can find small restaurants to have your lunch as well and after wards you can go with your relatives to their places . from Nicosia to Kyreania it might take half hours .

have a nice trip and good luck .
