I found out that Red Cross in Cyprus dont collect old clothes, toys or whatever. They generally dont accept material.
What is going on here. They accept only money? Why? We dont have poor families in Cyprus? And if we dont...none of the neighbor countries have?
I was cleaning and I gather lots of toys from my brother and my cousin in a very good condition and clothes that I dont want anymore. Does anyone knows where I can give them instead of through them away.
PS: Hazza never found that shop |

| If there isn't a charity then maybe there's an orphanage or children's hospital you can give them to? |

Nicosia Dog Shelter
Dog shelter is in serious need of any old towel , blankets, and sheets. As many of you pack out, any laundry detergent or cleaning agents donated would be so gratefully appreciated. Their store is in need of any adult clothes, children’s clothes, toys or bric a brac willing to be donated. Just call Jennifer at 99222446 and I’ll pick up the items outside your front door. |

Thanks Greek.God I will contact her soon.
Roseandchan I dont doubt about the Red Cross...they do get donations in cash and they help when they are needed. The shame here is that they do not collect any other material that they can give to poor families. |

Lena,
Hard Cash is more versatile and less costly to help others than clothes, toys and other good stuff. With cash they can buy what they need right now and get it to the needy right away, but all other things need people to pick up, sort out, store, and then deliver. It just takes too much "manpower" and logistics.
I think the Red Cross's motto should be, "SHOW ME THE MONEY".! |

Lena it may be too expensive for them to do this probably, as much as it would help you to get rid of your rubbish ...
Why don't you sell it yourself and give the money to a Charity. |

Yes you are right Kikapu that money can buy the right things eg medicine or food etc. But you cant imagine how many families need clothes and toys for the kids. I already found two families and plus the Dog shelter all those things will not go wasted. |

Just a quickie re charities here...... i was willing to donate huge amounts of toys, clothes etc to a children's home (government funded) that i 'discovered' here in limassol, thinking that i was 'doing a good deed' - however, i was regected and told that the organisation in question 'did not need anything' and wouldn't really use the things that i had!! I was quite surprised by their reaction. I was also told by them that there were no 'orphanages' in cyprus or homes that have 'needy' children!! I was quite taken aback by their comments and felt that there was a definate 'taboo' linked to the subject. I politely walked away, feeling quite sorry. Could this be true, i thought???? That ALL children in cyprus have EVERYTHING???!!
I continued my 'search' and refused to believe that nobody collected clothes, toys, bedding etc on the island!
HOWEVER....!! I discovered another two organisations that DID accept my toys, blankets, cots, clothes etc, etc, etc with huge open arms!!!!! I'm just so, so pleased that i was responsible for putting a smile on someone's face - simply by giving them a teddy to hug, a blanket to keep their baby warm (in the winter, of course!!) or a t-shirt to replace the old one they have.......
I think Cyprus needs to accept that not everyone can afford the latest handbag, pair of shoes or electronic toy!! Not everyone lives with a mummy or a daddy and has all their needs met.... Speak to particular 'voluntary' organisations that REALLY need your help, and they will tell you............ |
