Oh dear, I appear to have caused some offence with my previous post. I had hoped those individuals who could understand them would take them more humourously (hence suggestions for usage) but I can see that this was not the case.

Unfortuntely I can not edit or remove my post but will PM Admin and Lana and ask for a deletion.

I apologise wholeheartedly to those that took offence and send the warmest of fuzzies to those that did not.

Magnus, you have touched my heart. Now you are ripping it out. I did not translate for the ADMIN. I lied (apologies to L---). Too hot to handle, it was.

I have sent PMs to both Lana and Admin to apologise and ask for a deletion of the post and further references to it.

Although it was not my intention to offend, I think it only good practise if we all show a bit of good 'Netiquette' and am always happy to apologise if necessary. Very Happy

For those that are interested, here are the core rules of Netiquette:

Of course, further information can be found on Wikipedia and thorugh your search engine of choice.

Anyway, as a peace offering I hereby dedicate this fantastic tune to my Turkish-speaking friends and fellow forumers as performed by the greatest singer ever to walk God's beautiful Earth. Greek version follows after the Turkish version.

Ok, Ok, Apo's accepted, but we are not used to apologies here. This is a vast improvement. Laughing

Apology accepted magnus dear, although I didn't know what the words meant!! We often try and coax our Turkish teacher to "spill the beans" on a few naughty words - but she wont budge!! The "worst" phrase she ever told us was "Eşek kafılı" (donkey head, I believe) which is probably the most appropriate for some of the drivers here!!! Wink

Ah, well I would suggest that you refrain from showing her a printout and asking what those phrases meant. They are a little more 'colourful' than 'Donkey head'. Embarassed

Hope you enjoyed my peace offering though. I find that listening to music is often a good way to help with learning a language.

Under the correct circumstances,'esek kafali' can be a term of endearment. Your teacher was indeed a prude. Laughing

I think she is a lot more lively than she makes out!! She is stunningly beautiful and is in the national Turkish Cypriot folk dancing group - she also does salsa competitions.

Bill, my Turkish isn't great but I do know some very useful travel phrases that will help you win lots of friends on the other side.

1. When offered a handshake, say this:

elini sok

2. When your waitress brings you your order say:

Simdi de yala!

3. When introduced to a Turkish gentleman it is customary to say:

Anani

4. When introduced to a Turkish lady, it is customary to say:

emmeyi severmisin?

5. When asked for your passport at the border say:

Sok

6. If you are unfortunate enough to be threatened with violence, try this phrase to calm the situation:

agazina!

7. As a last resort try this:

Ananin , golgesinde trans!

If you need the translations I will be more than happy to provide them if our Turkish friends don't feel inclined.
