Warning Smile the translation was made with a little help from Altavista and therefore there might be mistakes in it. (I couldn't be bothered to do it all myself. Hope its not to bad. Wink ) Its weird what results this sometimes produces.....

Sponsoring revolution

1. FC Cologne who just climbed into the german federal laegue (Bundesliga) goes new ways with the Sponsoring. After information from the magazine "Spiegel" (mirror) from the coming season they will not promote for a product on their leotards, but for a whole country: Cyprus. Even the fans will profit from it.

Hamburg - the third biggest island in the Mediterranean wants to increase thereby its name recognition as a holiday destination on the German market.

The club grants the main sponsor far more than the usual advertising forms like the signature mark at the side fence, on the player chest or at the collar of the coachs jacket: In the future the FC professionals will have their winter training camp in Cyprus, cypriot coaches are sent for advanced training to Cologne and in the "RhineEnergyStadium" a travel agency will be opened, which offers Cyprus journeys to members and fans of the club at special conditions.

Contrived and completed was the deal by the cypriot group of investors of Satena, which with various building projects wishes to establish a tourism with higher standards. In the negotiations with the 1. FC Cologne the group has outpaced a big supermarket chain (Rewe) and a well known department store (Kaufhof). The club takes 4.35 million Euro per season, the Cyprus tourism authority expects medium-term a doubling of the number of the German holiday-makers, reaching then over 300.000 annually.

Further information says, the club will officially present the agreement on coming Tuesday on a press conference.

In case anyone knows German, here is the original article:

@sk: I wasn't sure either what to think of it. To answer your questions one should need to find out who is behind that Satena group....

its not that City, its just the image that popped into my head, footballers wearing something like this http://www.schoolbreeze.net/kit.jpg
then there is the big chunky football boots to go with it. Can't see Ronaldo wearing one of those myself!

Back to the subject, I already thought that Cyprus was popular with the people in Germany? I see alot of 1-to-fly reps, so there must be some sort of demand?

Or am I missing the whole point?

ah, ok, I see. well, yes, those ones are for gymnastic displays, but sometimes are also worn by men. Sure not in soccer though. Laughing

No, you do not miss the point. But as you can figure by the number of tourists they want to get from Germany in the future its not soooo many right now. Cyprus is known in Germany, but definitely not well known. Have met lots of people who first time heard of the country when the island joined the EU. Plus, compared to other destinations its expensive. For the costs of a flight only you may well have a one or even two weeks complete holiday package in Spain, Turkey or wherever. 1-2-fly is only one of the german tour operators sending people to Cyprus and not even a big one. On the bigger view for the german tourist market Cyprus is only a small piece.
Obviously the islands authorities would like to change this.

The deal has been cancelled, but is still under investigation from Cyprus authorities. It appeared that Satena has told the german club that they had a contract with the CTO which they had not.
Now the club is looking for another sponsor. Smile
