it doesnt necessarily has to be extreme.....50m tall will do...it will attract people ,examples=> heroes square in budapest.....really beautiful and the statue is only 36m.....
i think that generally we have lack of public infrastructure in cyprus like parks ,squares etc. i very happy though will the new designs of eleftheria square in nicosia,i really liked them.....giving the competition to a famous architect like zaha hadid was the best think...really impressive design!!!
and since eoka warrior mentioned the parliament, well it will be modern from the pics i saw which finds me against it because these modern buildings dont really last in time,i would have chosen a classical style, like ancient greek or rennaiscance or something that can be admired after many years also

i think that is what moose was referring to.

Exactly, you can build the monolithic monstrosities that 'EOKA-warrior' referred to, or you can have something more modest but infinitely more spectacular. When I said we needn't follow the American model of bigger is better, I should correct myself... it wasn't so much the Americans that promoted this ethos, it was the Nazis. EOKA-warriors outlandish projects wouldn't have looked out of place on Albert Speer's drawing table.

If you want proof that bigger isn't always better, go to the Archbishop's palace and take a good look at Makarios' statue... there's your proof...

I agree with sk's view on Elefteria Sq., I really like the new design. As for the parliament being some sort of mock Greek temple or mock-renaissance, I vehemently disagree. Either Cyprus is looking back or looking forward. It is possible to combine old and modern in a new structure. My personal preference would be to build the main structure of the building in the lovely colonial style of the Presidential Palace (using that awesome yellowish stone), but with modern features included, such as large areas of glass (tinted obviously) and possibly a glass dome roof. If you want an example of combining the old and new, look at the revamped Reichstag in Berlin, which is a truly awesome structure.

Hi Moose, I think its a matter of taste. I personally do not like the new look of the Reichstag as I beleive the new glass dome roof does not go nicely with the old style of the building....

I agree city, as we say in English 'horses for courses' or 'all things to all men'... I personally love the way the new dome brings light into the building. I imagine the old Reichstag building was as dark as the House of Commons in the UK.

As an alternative, Cyprus could go ultra modern and make a totally new statement a la the new Greater London Authority City Hall building in London which I think is absolutely incredible, even though many people don't like it (although its location means many people don't see it in its full glory). Incidentally, it was built by the same folks who revamped the Reichstag in Berlin.

I think Cypriots should work on improving their attitudes towards the tourists that they have at the moment, before thinking of what monument they could build to attract more.

I saw pictures in the latest edition of Cyprus Weekly I think. If you can get hold of a copy, they should be in there...

I think building a monument for the sake of it is a dumb idea and a waste of money. Besides the ancient buildings of significance like the walls of Nicosia, the mosque of Mohammed's auntie in Larnaca, the monastry of Apostolo Andrea, etc...Cyprus is steeped with so much history that anywhere you step on the island has more important historical meaning than any Statue of Liberty, WTC, Eiffel Tower, etc.

Exactly Source, I take back all I've said about you being a chav!

Halle Sultan Tekke is one of the most beautiful and serene places you will ever see, even though it's on the main flightpath... just driving past the Salt Lake at dawn seeing it on the horizon is inspiring. Apostolos Andreas I've never been to, so I don't know. The walls of Nicosia are an architectural gem, and should be on UNESCO's list if they're not. Plus, don't forget the Choirokitia site, that too is one of archaeology's great sites in Europe.

Cyprus is blessed with monuments and ancient buildings already... who needs a mega statue to demonstrate anything?

Jimmy is either inglasos or pseftos kypraio. Or a turk........

NikosSampson,
In Cypriot Greek you should type it in the following way
"Jimmy is either Englezos or psefto Kypraios."

The way you wrote the above sounds like the way some TCs speak Cypriot Greek.
