Invasion of the giants

Postby cannedmoose » Tue Jun 07, 2005 4:58 pm

Did anyone seen this article in the financial news section of Cyprus Weekly (June 3-9, 2005)?

With Carrefour apparently planning a takeover of Chris Cash and Carry (gotta love their adverts... classy), Tesco apparently interested in Orphanides and Lidl on the way, do you think that the Cyprus consumer shopping experience is about to undergo radical change? At the moment, Cyprus town planning regulations restrict the development of out-of-town hypermarkets in order to safeguard the interests of small traders. On the surface at least this is a restriction on trade, but hasn't yet been challenged in the Cypriot courts. Should one of these giants seek to challenge it, I'm sure they will and I think you'll see a big change in the way people shop in Cyprus... gone will be the restrictive opening times, in comes 24 hour shopping and buying everything from one shop. It'll be an interesting change for many I bet...

It'll certainly shake the Cyprus supermarkets out of their lethargy... surly customer service, lack of stock, overcrowded and ridiculously thin aisles... hopefully we'll see the back of them...

Oh, and as for the price of electrical goods, let's see a Tesco hypermarket start selling microwaves and washing machines for 2/3 of the price of Cypriot retailers, then we'll see how much they can really afford to reduce their margins. :D

It's not certain that the consumer will benefit. It may mean that the greedy Cypriot managers will buy their wholesale goods cheaper and retail them at the same price as now: more profit for their foreign masters. I hope this will not be the case but I don't expect to see Carrefour goods at anything like the French Carrefour prices. Why create a war when you can compete more profitably without one?

I agree re crowded alleys. Orphanides Larnaca is terrible. When Orphanides Strovolos opened, it was a relative pleasure, but they have spoiled it by blocking all the alleys with goods. In addition, they do the shelf stacking in opening hours, which is not done in Europe (except if goods run out), and that further blocks shoppers' convenience. They have a lot to learn.

I don't think 24 hr shopping is justified here.
