I AM MOVING TO CYPRUS IN JULY AND MY CAR IS SIX MONTHS OLD IN SEP AND AT THE MOMENT ONLY DONE 2,000 MILES... ANYBODY KNOW A GOOD SHIPPING COMPANY FOR CARS AND FURNITURE

Hi Caroline

If you are retiring to Cyprus (as opposed to moving here to take up employment) you may bring your car into the country without Import Duty or VAT providing you have owned it for over 6 months and paid VAT in an EU country.

If this does not apply, Import Duty can be very expensive, perhaps as much as the value of your car, if it has a large engine; please see my comments on an earlier thread where someone was discussing importing a limo.

You will have to pay Registration Fees and have it MOT (yes I know it is nearly new) and have the speedo converted to kph only.

The general view is, it is not worth bringing cars over here; if you have to pay the full Duty it certainly is not.

I suppose you could import it once it is 6 months old, but I am not sure if C&E will regard it as a 'personal possession' if it is imported 2 months after you move here. My advice is to contact C&E here and find out the position.

If you tell me the engine capacity I can tell you what the Import Duty/Registration Fees are.

Also, some UK spec cars may not have 'Tropical spec' cooling and a/c units.

Exactly the reason I've dissuaded my dad from bringing his car and van over... in Cyprus you'll really value this, it's not just a convenience during mid-summer, it's an absolute necessity.

Ouch, convertible in Cyprus... may sound nice and appropriate but could risk severe sunstroke... please tell me you don't have black leather seats in it though...

Hi Caroline

You mentioned 'driving it over'; it is not possible to do that. You might be able to get it on a RORO ferry from Italy, otherwise it is by boat all the way.

I have a convertable and am about to replace it with with another and will specify leather; all ladies like leather :-) . June- September, you will only have the roof down before 9am and after 7pm.

Caroline, since it's got aircon, it's definitely worth taking. I'm not sure about Svetlana's advice about ro-ro's from Italy. My dad was looking to bring his two vehicles over by the Italy-Greece-Cyprus routes and could find absolutely no ferry services operating. The only way to do it is via cargo ship and with you flying, so you may as well get it all shipped from the UK to save the trouble of driving long-distance and then having to fly (unless you'd enjoy the trip, I certainly would!)

P.S. Svetlana, that avatar is creeping me out for some reason... hope that's not you... apologies if it is... just looks a bit sinister and 'gothic mansion-ey'
