| The Turks kept it as a bargaining chip with the intention of giving it back to the Greeks in exchange, probably, for recognition or something similar. |

Exactly Chris, Denktas dangled it in front of Clerides many times as an incentive to back off from maximalist positions and give concessions to the TC.
As far as I know, the only occupants of Varosha are UN and Turkish soldiers along with a number of the families of Turkish officers. I also believe that its used as a R&R post for some Turkish officers, the evidence of which would appear to be some very well-kept apartment blocks along the seafront, which you can see in the aerial shots on that site. |

| Not forgetting the other occupants of Varosha, the stray cats and dogs. Varosha would be a brilliant case study in what happens to urban environments when abandoned by humanity, the environment gradually takes over. |

| Thrill, if you haven't done so already, take a look at the site posted in the first post in this thread, many of the buildings are indeed ransacked, but there are the odd few that look in surprisingly good nick... |

Seeing that was pretty depressing, somewhere in there is our house but probably none of its contents. Last time I saw the place it was a beautiful day and we along with everyone else were running for our lives.
Never been over the border since it opened up not because of any enemity or high mindedness but because we can't go to what was our home so whats the point of going! Those friends and family who have gone come back depressed. Probably the same on the other side. |
