Take my advice and try to push away that idea.
There are NO "hot spots" for spearfishing except two: the first is illegal (british controlled waters), and as for the second, I'm not crazy enough to tell you!
Seriously, South Cyprus has one of the poorest seas for spearfishing, especially the last 7-10 years. It's not comparable to Italy at all.
Of course, if you like chasing mullets around, that's another story...

Of course it's better.
Richer waters, and people there are not very spearfishing fanatics, so they left something to live.
Oh, don;t call me racist now, it's a fact that not many people go fishing at the north.

pat85 - Welcome and enjoy your stay when you get there. Could I make a suggestion with the greatest of respect, instead of a speargun buy, borrow or rent an underwater camera and photograph the fish you intend to kill. You can also photograph anything else that you find of interest. That way our children and their children will be able to see those same fish and enjoy them as much as us. If you then want to eat fish buy some and enjoy it. I wish you a safe journey.
