LGR LIVE AT THE TWO-DAY EXTRAVAGANZA

The two-day extravaganza will take place this weekend June 27-28 at Alexandra Palace,it's the biggest festival of it's kind in British Cypriot Calendar, to attract at least 20,000, many of whom will want to redeem their vouchers for a free bottle of wine. Yes, the strong whiff of souvlakia will soak up the air in Muswell Hill.

The festival was conceived in 1983, set-up by the AKEL movement with close, tangible links to Parikiaki newspaper. The wine festival itself is rooted in a 2,500 year-old Limassol tradition, which still takes place today, in September. Back then men worshipped the gods, and to honour the god of Wine, Dionysus and Aphrodite, the goddess of love.

UK Cypriots go to the annual festival, as a way to connect and feel good about their ethnicity.

Non-ethnic visitors go to savour the utter beautifulness of the Mediterranean island.

Headline act is Stelios Dionisiou, who is son of the legendary Stratos Dionisiou.

Stelios, born in Athens, in 1974, his dominant role-models had been his dad and sibling, Aggelos Dionisiou, who sings the authentic, traditional Greek music or good laiko song. He first appeared with his father, in 1990 (at the Strato), his debut professional performance was in 1996 (Thessaloniki).

Reports suggest a new collaboration with his brother, Aggelos, will feature an exciting tribute album to Stratos Dionisiou.

In a word Psila ta Heria! Let’s get the party on a roll.

I used to go roller-skating at Ally Pally in the mid/late-70s, on Saturday mornings ...

I was the cool one who never fell over! Cool

Did anybody else go? Very Happy

I've been there once. I was the one who never managed to stand on his feet. Smile
