Travelling Around !!

Postby GTraveller » Thu Aug 27, 2009 11:23 pm

I am thinking of hiring a car and travelling around during an up and coming holiday. I want to drive north from Limassol or Larnaca upto Kyrinea/Bellapais area then along coast/west round to Paphos coming from the north.
I would appreciate any advice on travelling south-north-south crossings etc.

Interesting route but I think you will have big problems finding border crossings/checkpoints.
You have many experts on this forum with the "knowledge"

And you're not allowed to take hire cars into the occupied area.

That is wrong, I am afraid. Some car hire companies may have a policy forbidding it - but not all do. I know from experience that Avis have nothing against it.

However, the route that G Traveller has described will only be possible when (if?) the Liminitis (Yeşilırmak) crossing opens. At the moment you cannot get across to Paphos along the north coast, I am afraid.

I'll re word that to MOST hire car companies do not allow you to go with their cars into the occupied area.

Thanks for the advice, I had already 'sounded out' hire firms permitting use of their cars in the north and the insurance/breakdown situation.
I suppose my biggest concern is crossing back from north to south at the west end of the island. I was hoping that we wouldn't have to come back to Nicosia to return south!

Hello GTraveller

Why not wait a few years to do this route ...

The crossing closest to the north-western end of the Green Line is at Astromeritis/Bostanci about five kilometres south-west of Morfou/Guzelyurt, and just off the main Nicosia-Troodos highway. I use it regularly without problem, it is a vehicle crossing and is open 24 hours.

Unfortunately the Liminitis-Yesilirmak crossing, which would be effectively on the coast, is not yet open but is scheduled to be so next year I believe.
