Hate to be a stick in the mud, but since I'd imagine that prostitution is illegal in Cyprus, is this not violating the rules of the forum folks?

Yeah, and I really shouldn't need to pay for it anyway. I'm 22 yrs old, fit, have a good job, motorcycle, truck, house. Unfortunately I just got out of a 5 year relationship and don't really have any idea on how to pick up girls. I'm taking a salsa dance class soon, maybe it'll help me get some game.

If any of you tourist females are visiting vegas, check out

I'll give you a tour.

Pretty funny about the "source".

Definately not illegal in Cyprus, a relative who is a nursing sister used to have to check the girls for Sexually Transmitted Deseases and sign up their municipality issued certificates.

Not sure what the procedure is now but my 'friendly' little policeman brings in half a dozen Moldavian girls every couple of months. Do'nt think they come into Cyprus as prostitutes but by the time he and his mates have slapped these 16 and 17 year olds around a bit they seem to take to the work quite well.

You've got to be kidding me rotate re. Surely on the statute books, prostitution is a criminal offence. I'm sure that some police condone it and even get a back-hander (of either variety) from it as happens everywhere, but I can't believe with the domination of the Orthodox church in all things moral, that the state's policy on prostitution would be like that of the liberal Dutch...

In so far as I can tell the act of prostitution was/is not illegal it was/is the procurement, offer to sell or purchase, advertisement, organistion (pimping) and the accomodation (brothel) that are.

The Act or Law remained virtually the same in the RoC of the 1960/70's as when introduced earlier by the British Colonial Administration. The pragmatic Municipality approach was to allow prostitution to continue providing it was not "in the face" of Cypriot society and that the spread of STD's was guarded against, hence the quarterly medical checks. An understandable and sensible solution in a country where bridal virginity was and possibly still is highly valued making the sexual gratification of the unmarried Cypriot male population and large numbers of servicemen first British then Greek virtually impossible leading to the possibility of rape.

Whilst not condoning prostitution the position of the Orthodox Church can be summed up by what my wife's cousin a priest has told me, simply that the Son of God did not come to earth to save the worthy he came to save the sinner! which again is a pragmatic view of life free of all the moral mumbo jumbo hang ups of the Catholic and Anglican branches of Chritianity. That is not to say that prostitution was or would be tolerated in a setting other than that of a large town by the Church and its congregation or if Orthodox 'girls' were involved.

The availability of prostitutes was widely known pre 1974 in Famagusta and probably the other towns as well, their services being sought by servicemen of all nationalities, Cypriots and Merchant Seamen. Naturally and so as not to offend sensibilities the 'girls' were known then as they are today as Cabaret Artistes and were drawn from the countries surrounding Cyprus, the establishments in the So-Ho area of Famagusta employed mostly 'girls' from the Lebanon and perhaps somewhat surprisingly Israel.

Although never having availed myself of the services of a Cypriot prostitute (or any other nationality for that matter) I did know some of the 'girls' who worked in Famagusta before 74. One of my brother-in-law's an undergraduate electrical engineer whose studies were in the UK would spend his holidays working in the Cabaret's of Famagusta much to the anger of his mother and the amusement of his brothers and sisters.
My brother-in-law would operate and maintain the sound and lighting systems and made more money working a few hours a night than any of his brothers in regular jobs. Being 'Jack-the-Lad' my brother-in-law had a number of relationships with the girls and more than a few of them turned up at my mother-in-laws house for a meal always being described as foreign tourists, I do'nt think my mother-in-law ever caught on to what the true nature of their position was in Cyprus!

To confirm after conducting some secondary research, £80 in the south for a night, in comparison to £60 in the North.

Can anyone confirm?
