North Cyprus....is it safe...?

Postby Nickp » Sat Jul 09, 2005 1:07 pm

Hi there,

I'm planing on visiting North Cyprus and have am a bit concerned as to how safe it is over there for foreigners and GC's.

As the Turkish army caused all sorts of atrocities when it invaded. What's to stop undisciplined soldiers and settlers doing the same in the status quo as they are a law to themselves with no diplomatic representation to the world to answer to.

Whats to stop them is just themselves. As you know they don't care about laws and legality, so basically you have only the rights they decide you have. (e.g. They decided that 200.000 people don't have the right to live in their own homes)
"TRNC" is a paradise for criminal fugitives from UK and other countries, and since "TRNC" is illegal it has no treaties with other countries. So if you go there, you are on your own.

In my experience, I've never been harassed or treated with anything other than hospitality in the north. I'm English and my wife is GC and we've been welcomed and chatted to everywhere we've been. I'm sure there are places you wouldn't go to, but that's the same in the south n'est que pas?

I'm sure you'll be fine.

The North is perfectly safe, it's also much cheaper and the people are much friendlier than what they are in the south so you get the best of all worlds!

Hi nickp, no need to be afraid. I 've been visiting the north a few times as a tourist and no problem at all. I felt very welcome. Like in any other country.
They would be pretty stupid scaring tourists away, now that they get some more.. Tourists bring money and business if you like to see it that way.
Of course you should not sit down and start discussing the political situation....

Not to forget its definitely worth to see!

In case one has more strong views at the issue like f.e. piratis, than he should probably not go there at all.

I believe that on principle Piratis hasn't been to the north, and we should respect him in standing by what he believes. Like I said though, no problems for 99.99% of the people, I have yet to hear of anyone being attacked, abused or harrassed up north.

Well, I am sure some of you people wouldn't have a problem if your daughter was kidnapped and was sold as a whore and the people that had sex with her were coming on forums commenting on how nice was to fuck her.

However I have a problem, and this is the last thread on how some others are profiting from the rape of my country.
