Right favourite books for Oracle:

1. Dean Koontz - Frankenstein (3 books in total)
2. James Herbert - The Lair and Rats
3. Stephen King - IT

I will think of some more and let you know.

Can anybody comment on Twilight?
Stephen King says Stephanie Meyer '..can't write with a darn.'

Thanks lioness ... I've never been a fan of the horror genre but my son is keen to start reading Stephen King and since he's only twelve I usually do a fast read beforehand to check on suitability. I must say "IT" sounds like one of the scariest and I was thinking of starting him off with something like "Misery" ... have you read that one? ... although judging by the film that could just be a little sadistic. Maybe I'll have a go with "IT" then ... :?

If you like full blown horror you may find my choices too tame  So, I'm really stuck with what to recommend. I read "Disgrace" by Coetze a few weeks ago and that is definitely worth a read although it had an unsatisfactory ending.

I've been reading the short stories by Richard Yates over the last few days and I can't wait to start another one every time one finishes ... but I'll only allow myself 3 per day due to pressing work matters. The "Eleven Kinds of Loneliness" is a superb collection.

I'll leave you with those at the moment in case you think they are a major yawn ...

I will pop to the library tomorrow after work and see if they have the above mentioned. I will definately give them a go. Perhaps you should try Stephen Kings short stories (more like ghost stories then horror) for your son first, they are good. Not too scary.

What a great idea! Thanks. I hadn't even considered that.

Actually, I was thinking, earlier, about the goriest book I've read, and I've mentioned it before on the forum because it's actually a fabulous read, draws you in and doesn't let you stop thinking about it for months afterwards. It's "Perfume" by Patrick Suskind. We did that at my "mums book club" and it had 100% approval.
