many greek professors today even claim that byzintines werent greeks we know today. they were a mix of local anatolians. (todays Armenians, assyrians, kurds, greeks, etc) they were even writing in latin before they made the official language greek.

efe, the dominant culture and language was Greek, around 85% of the populace were Greek in the Byzantine Empire. But they considered themselves Romans (but past 9th century the word 'hellene' started to become used more and more often), we cannot speak of it being 'Greek' in comparison to today because Nation States are a modern invention, but the Byzantine Empire was the forerunner of the Modern Hellenic Republic, why do you think Historians call it "The Empire that became a Nation."? For all intesive purposes, by around the mid 8th century, the Empire had become totally hellenized, and even before the Latin-Greek Schism of East and West the East was still an effectively Greek Run Autonomous Empire. You have to understand that in the earlier times of say, 2nd century BC, there was a fusion between Greek and Roman ideas, that is why Civilization at that time was referred to as 'Greco-Roman', because they effectively molded into one, after all, was it not Horace who said that "Graecia capta ferum victorem cepit" (Captive Greece conquered the conquerer).

When the divison (schism) happened though, the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine) effectively began to follow it's own destiny, and the 2 cultures of Latin and Greek started to divide again, therefore, although Rome still hadf many influences (Constantinopoli as 'Nova Roma') they were largely ceremonial (like title of Augustus), but even then in mid 7th Century Heraclius replaced the Latin Titles with Greek Ones, and one of the best examples of the Empires dominant 'Greekness' was when Heraclius was fighting great battles with the Persians, he emphasized an entirely Greek struggle against Persia.

A lot of stupid races try and lay claim to Byzantium, like the Albanians for example (stealing the two headed eagle and claiming Justinian was Albanian ((He was the last Latin Emperor))), but the truth is, is that very few minorities in the Byzantine Empire contributed very much towards it, if you read some of the sources, such as diaries by minorities in Byzantine Army, they will talk a lot about how they are releagetd to second class status in Army, I read one by an Bulgar after the reign of Vasillis II talking about all the friction between a couple of Bulgars and himself in the regiment and the Greeks. But even then he said they recognized the greater threat (Muslims).

Also Efe, if you want I can recommend some good books on Byzantine Empire. Also, the city was not founded in Byzantine Times, but in Athenian times when Athenians colonized Minor Asia.

anyways, all iam saying is that noone has the right to insult us. i dont get insulted but some people may think they are accomplishing that.

i am a local in this city and i actually am proud to have hagia sophia as a part of my city as much as blue mosque. galata tower (venicians), maidens tower (romans/byzintine) do prove the great civilizations who once controlled this great city.

Maybe you should start looking after Ayia Sofia instead of letting it gradually crumble away.

It was Greeks from Asia Minor (The Ionians) who colonised Athens.

Source you have to understand that it is very political the way they let Agia Sophia crumble away but keep the Blue Mosque in pristine condition. It is aa show of Political strength, a way of showing the Greeks who is in ontrol of Constantinopoli. In it's heyday, the Agia Sophia was a far greater architectural achievement that blue mosque, I was speaking to one of my dad's friends who is a architect and he was saying that Middle-Eastern Mosque design goes for this sort of architectural 'pomposity', like, putting in Domes everywhere, the Agia Sophia was a masterpiece, look at it, it's not as blue as blue mosque but it is perfect, the way the domes are balanced, the way the Ionic Columns are not overused, the way it has a simplistic but awesome outside look contrasting with the massive interior.

Here's a shocker:

http://www.cyprus-mail.com/news/main.ph ... 0&cat_id=1

IF THE security checks at the airport weren’t gruelling enough, FC Anorthosis of Famagusta got their first real taste of Turkish hospitality at Trabzonspor yesterday, with scenes last night of 500 protesters gathered menacingly outside their hotel.

Media reports said the hundreds of protesters included a number of Grey Wolves, an extreme nationalist group. The amassed crowd threatened to cut off the footballers’ heads and shouted ‘You will die’ and ‘Cyprus is Turkish’.

According to reports, the local authorities did very little to dissuade the crowd.

Today Anorthosis face the Trabzonspor in the return leg of an historic Champions League qualifier.

Club officials, players and some 100 fans were subjected to close body searches – Turkish authorities cited security reasons – and all baggage was opened up and sifted through. Euro MP Yiannakis Matsis, travelling to the Turkish city to watch the game, was even asked to take off his shoes and socks, as the scenes unfolded before media crews from a number of countries. Cypriot journalists spoke of hostile and humiliating treatment.

Last night Matsis expressed his concern for the safety of the Cypriot contingent, saying he worried about extreme displays of fanaticism at the match.

“That’s how I see this developing,” he said, speaking from the hotel.

The Anorthosis team and supporters arrived at the airport shortly after 3am yesterday after an exhausting trip. They had departed from Larnaca airport, transferred to a Syrian airlines charter and then flown to Trabzonspor.

The club had refused an offer to fly direct from Ercan airport in the occupied north, and the Turkish government still prohibits Cypriot planes from approaching or landing Turkish territory.
There was a heavy police presence both inside and outside the airport, where a few dozen Trabzonspor supporters had gathered to heckle the Cypriot team.

Last Tuesday the GSP stadium in Nicosia was turned into a fortress, as Cypriot police enforced draconian security measures. Despite fears of a flare-up, with potentially disastrous political consequences, everything went smoothly and no incidents were reported.

A spokesman for Trabzonspor said yesterday that the club would reciprocate Anorthosis’ hospitality. UEFA is keeping close tabs on the high-risk fixture, and some 1,000 Turkish police will be deployed at the venue.

The fixture has been billed as the ultimate grudge match, pitting Anorthosis, a refugee side now in exile in Larnaca since 1974, against a Turkish team. Emotions were certainly running high at the first leg in Nicosia last week, but Anorthosis’ 3-1 win has raised the stakes even higher.

The appeal of the game leaves little doubt that Trabzonspor’s venue, the Avni Aker stadium, will be packed to capacity (21,000 plus). Visitors Anorthosis are bracing for a hellish night there and the players will need to keep their cool and their minds on the game amid a charged and intimidating atmosphere.

A spokesman for the club said yesterday Anorthosis’ players were prepared to take the heat and that their only concern was progression to the next round of the Champions League qualifiers.

Still, there was no brushing aside the tension building up, as football fanaticism inevitably mixed with politics. Reports said that Turkish Minister of Public Works Faruk Ozak yesterday visited Trabzonspor’s training ground in a show of support. And there were reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat would be in the stands on match day.

Meanwhile the press in Turkey and the breakaway regime did their part in turning up the heat. A paid ad reprinted in nationalist Volkan urged Trabzonspor to throw Anorthosis’ players into the sea. It read:

“Forward lads! Those who threw the Greeks into the Aegean in 1922, those who in 1974 hurled back the Greek Cypriots to the south of the Mediterranean, let them by the same token punish the Greek Cypriots at the Avni Aker stadium. Let us squeeze them into the Black Sea. Allah be with us!”

The ad was signed by a group of businessmen, lawyers and academics.

Naturally the pressure was a two-edged sword, as the onus fell on the hosts to avenge the first-leg defeat. The club’s president Atay Aktug yesterday felt compelled to say that Trabzonspor’s failure to qualify should not be viewed as treason.

Back in Cyprus, quarters criticised the government for leaving Anorthosis out in the cold. DISY deputy Soteris Sampson said no representative of the government, even a low-rank official, would be escorting the Cypriot team.

“Anorthosis fought not just for itself but for the whole of Cyprus,” said Sampson, alluding to the first game in Nicosia.

“But now, for all the government’s praise, they have been left alone at the mercy of God… or should I say Allah.”
