Reminds me of when they had smoking and no smoking carriages on trains. And a non smoker would ignore all the empty non smoking carriages to get into the one with a smoker or smokers sat in it and immediately start complaining that it was a non smoking carriage!

And the reason that the smokers could not seek out a smoking compartment in the first place is? |

Because it is a smoking compartment Tim...
What would that tell you about the likely atmosphere in there...? |

I have no idea what you are talking about. All I can say is that as a non-smoker all I wish for is the right not to have to inhale other people's toxic fumes in places that I have no choice but to be, such as public buildings, public transport or workplaces. I do not ask for a total smoking ban at such places, just for designated non-smoking areas to exist. I have an open mind about places like restaurants and bars that people can choose to frequent or not. I was perfectly happy when there were non-smoking compartments on trains, rather than having a blanket ban. However, I expect smokers to respect this. Quite frankly when I hear some ignorant, selfish inconsiderate oaf complain about being asked to refrain from smoking in a designated non-smoking compartment on a train where facilities for smokers are available, it makes me wonder why I should be so reasonable. Perhaps there has to be a rigid blanket ban if that is the only thing some people will understand. |

I apologise, I miss-read your original quote... I thought you said "And the reason that the non-smokers could not seek out a smoking compartment in the first place is?"
However, reference your last point...
I think it is unreasonable to tar (snigger) all smokers with the same brush because a small minority abuse the rules...
It is rather like saying that because a driver pulled out in front of you ALL drivers are bad.
I do completely agree with your point that there should be smoking and non-smoking areas so that we all have the freedom to choose which we frequent. |

I smoke in fact I am blowing smoke at the computer right now & enjoying it.
Actually I have been both a smoker & a non smoker & it has been my choice but I wouldn't dream of interfering with the choices of others. I wouldn't smoke anywhere I wasn't supposed to & if others do, it's their look out if they get caught.
As a non smoker, if I didn't like others smoking near me I could move away, or go somewhere else like sit next to the traffic & breath in all the car fumes! or the dust in the air! or go visit someone how continuously sprays fly killer & artificial air fresheners & breath those in.
You are obviously a wonderful law abiding citizen never did anything you shouldn't.
You don't smoke! and are obviously a very controlling person as you wish to control what others do.
My advice is get a life and go live on an uninhabited island. |

Smokers unite!
I have just filed a lawsuit against my wife for illegally inhaling 6 of my cigarettes p/annum for the last 20 years without paying for them!
I'm also considering doing separate ones for the kids just as soon as I find a loophole making them liable... |
