CF, why 'MUST'? If anything, GC and Greek culture have less in common today than ever before. Being in Cyprus doesn't feel to me like being in Greece at all to be honest, it's a different ambience entirely. Plus, there are two strands to modern nation-hood, one towards supranationality, i.e. the evolution of a political European Union, which appears to have reached its zenith and be somewhat on the wane now; secondly, one towards fragmentation and regionalisation of the state, exhibited through the move away from centralisation and increasing autonomy and even independence for particular regions of the state. Therefore, I think we're far more likely to see an independent Crete than Cyprus becoming a mere province of a greater Greece.

If anything, the trend of history has been against unification of Cyprus with Greece. Cyprus was politically and socially part of the hellenic world thousands of years ago. Whilst a majority of the population of the island have an enduring attachment to hellenism, in political and economic terms today, Cyprus is nothing like Greece and is not becoming so. There is also little interest in either Greece or Cyprus promoting the cause of enosis, which is increasingly redundant given Cyprus' membership of the EU, within which legally Cyprus has joined a political entity greater than just little Greece.

I therefore dispute your logic that the unification of Cyprus and Greece is a 'must', or even logical.

I don't actively support it, nor do I push for it. I just think it will happen eventually, I just can't see it NOT happening, but I don't see it happening in the next 5 or 6 decades.

CF, fair enough, but what factors do you see in place for such a (re)unification occurring? As I said in my post, all evidence from history points to the contrary.

To be honest I can't see Turkey surviving in it's present state, I think if the Kurds are granted their own state then a lot of other Ethnic groups will start pressuring as well, I believe this will create interal turmoil and Turkey will continue to exist, but as a very different Turkey to the one we know today. From that I cannot say how it will lead to a unified Cyprus, I can just see Greece expanding itself to the point where there is no other option.

I agree with you on one point, I think Turkey in its present form will not survive the century. Whether this will mean the creation of a totally separate Kurdish state is questionable and depends on other factors in the region. However, we shall witness the development of greater autonomy for the nations that constitute modern Turkey, which is a move that should encourage stability rather than augur the instability that you foresee.

I can't see any of these autonomous regions wanting to integrate with Greece because very few people with a deep affinity for Greece remain in Turkey after the events of the early 1920s. I therefore can't see Greece expanding at Turkey's expense.

my friend u r wrong, cyprus isn't in a better economical situation than greece...
if u said that the greeks of cyprus is more wealthy than us is right...they are...like unites of course!not like a state!
greece like a state is richer than cyprus...
greece is a part of e.u since 1980...this show us that greece have pass the "border" of an "x" economical situation about 26 years before cyprus...

how 1,5 million people can make a richer state that the other one that reach 11 million....
this is only belong to your fantasy....

do you know what means "kalamarades"??they are the people who speaks too much and do no action!!!
greek state do action when the greek goverment send every year 40% of its special forces to cyprus borders (el.dy.k) and only 6% at the turkish boarders in evros!

this is not words!IS ACTION!

when greek goverment buy 160 tanks with S300 missiles from russia to state them over the cyprus is an action(and guess who will pay theese missiles...the greek people i supposed?not to mention tha fact that every
6 s300 missiles cost like an f-18 hornet!and every tank have 6 of them!!)
its another thing that finally the missiles stated to crete and not to cyprus!

THIS IS ALSO AN ACTION!

that greece take every year pepople of cyprus to study in greek universities isn't an action?

that what cyprionts need is to understand is that they belong to GREEK NATION...AND SO THEY HAVE TO UNITE WITH THE GREECE>>>

i cant understand, r u a greek-cypriot or a turkish????
if u r greek shame to you...

Get lost! I am a greek cypriot and I have no desire for my country to unite with Greece. And guess why? Because it's only going to cause even more trouble than it already has.

No, it's definitely not worth the mess it's bound to cause. I'd much rather having an independent Cyprus where we'll have finally managed to come to terms with the fact that we're not the only ones that live here, than unite with Greece and have all the friction all over again.

Yes, we are Greeks. We feel Greek. But we don't have to impose it on those who don't wish to consider themselves Greeks. We can still be Greeks in Jamaica.

Well, since you started to reply ...

Union with Greece until 1960 meant liberation. We were under the Ottomans like Greece and then under the British, and of course we wanted to be liberated from them. What we hoped at that time is that Greece would have the power to liberate us like it happened with other islands, since doing this alone was impossible. However as it was proven Greece didn't have this power. As they said in Greece: "Cyprus is too far".

Union (enosis) was about 2 things: 1) Liberation 2) Security. Greece however didn't have the power to provide these.

So the best way to be liberated and secure today is with a truly independent Cyprus part of the EU. Being part of the Greek state wouldn't make as any more Greeks than we already are. People that can not see this suffer from some sort of inferiority complex.

Also being part of the Greek state would have many negatives. Personally I wouldn't want to live in a remote district of Greece. Having our own government is an advantage not a disadvantage. And our flag is better than the Greek, it must be the best flag in the world.

Aslo do not forget, that while the 82% of Cypriots are Greek, there is another 18% that it is not. That 18% strongly opposes this union. So why should we insist on something that a big part of the population is strongly against when it offers absolutely no benefit to us?

Hey you kalamara stop saying bullshits.

The only thing that i admire about Greece doing for Cypriots is that they accept Cypriot students to their Universities and thank you for that. But u saying that if it wasnt for Greece we wouldnt exists its pure bullshits. On the contrary its for Greece that now Cyprus is in this mess. And by the way read this so that u know how much Greece wanted Cyprus:

In a further attempt to gain Greek support for Serbia, Sir Edward Grey offered, on October 16, to transfer Cyprus to Greece. But eight days later the new Greek government of Alexander Zaimis, backed by the king, formally refused the offer. The British foreign secretary's initiative, agreed upon at an informal meeting of the 'War Committee', was criticised both in the cabinet and in the House of Commons for having been taken without proper cabinet consultation. But, in fact, as Roy Jenkins points out in his biography of Asquith, the Cyprus offer had been thoroughly discussed by the cabinet in January 1915. George V's secretary, Lord Stamfordham, had then written to Asquith:

The King desires me to express the earnest hope that the Government will, on further consideration, decide to support Sir E. Grey's proposal and offer Cyprus to Greece on condition of her joining the Allies. . .. Financially Cyprus is I suppose a loss to this country. Strategically, HM understands that it has proved a failure, the harbours impracticable and ships obliged to lie off six miles from the coast."

Source: http://www.cyprus-conflict.net/turkey-greece%20history.htm

And one final thing, im a GC but i dont feel greek at all.Actually the only reason that im calling myself GC is because i speak greek. When Greece won Euro i didnt care and i didnt celebrate on the contrary i said "oi poustokalamarades will not shut up bragging about it now" the same thing i said when u won Eurovision. The only thing i got proud of in many many years is when Anorthosis beated the Turkish team and i'm even considering changing team for that. But in no case i ever felt any proud of anything that a greek national did.
I have no problem with any GCs consdering themselves more Greeks than Cypriots if they do fine let it be, but in no way you can come in here and tell us if we should feel greek or not. This only reminds me of the biggest jerk in Cyprus history (Grivas Digenis).

p.s Keep on dreaming of Acquiring Cyprus to ur nation and read my signature for further details.

--Peace out...

Tell me what Greece did exactly to prevent the Turks occupying the whole island... oh yes, that's right. They instigated a coup to overthrow the elected leader of the GC community, helped install a madman whose track record of murdering TCs was well known, did not send assistance when Turkish troops landed on the island... yeah, great support, thanks mother Greece.

Greece has its own interests and they're not in 'protecting' Cyprus. If Turkey agreed to the extension of Greek territorial waters in return for Greece reducing support for Cyprus, Athens would snatch their arm off. Almost as many Cypriots go to universities in other countries as go to Greece now, because they realise the quality of education elsewhere is superior to that in Greece and it won't take them 6 years to get a degree.

Arrogant nationalism is a scratched record, change it...

P.S. If it hadn't been for British and French ships fighting and defeating in the battle of Navarino an Ottoman Egyptian fleet sent to crush the rebellion in Greece, it's highly likely that you wouldn't be talking like this... Greeks didn't just free themselves... you needed help to do so and for that you should be grateful.
