Cyprus 'EU problem'

NICOSIA - The Cyprus problem is a problem of the international community, primarily of the EU, German Ambassador in Nicosia Gottfried Zeitz said.

Zeitz, who met in Parliament with House President Yiannakis Omirou, on the occasion of his departure from Cyprus, also expressed Germany’s support to efforts for a Cyprus settlement.

According to an official press release, Yiannakis Omirou expressed gratitude for the fact that Germany’s position on the Cyprus problem is based on principles.

Omirou referred to the current phase of the direct negotiations between President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, reiterating the commitment of the Greek Cypriot side to the process.

At the same time he pointed out that the key of the solution in Cyprus lies in Ankara and stressed how important it is for Cyprus to have the solidarity of big European countries, such as Germany, in the effort for a just and viable solution of the Cyprus problem in line with international law and UN resolutions.
