Hi all,
I've just moved to Pafos and I'm trying to find out..
Does a vehicle have to be under 4 years old to import as I have been told?
I'm looking to import a Land Rover double cab pickup, though I'm also still looking around Cyprus for the right vehicle too.

Hi Dean
As far as I know, the 4 year old rule does not apply, nor I think the old 'no LHD' rule. If you are not intending to work you are entiled to buy a Duty Free car here or import one. If you are not entitled to a DF car, Import Duty will be very high.

Thanks for the reply.I have been told that a double cab only attracts £1250 duty for a 2500cc engine, but it seems very difficultto get a definitive answer, especially as things seem to be changing so much right now.
I am working here,so no DF I'm afraid |

HI LRmech
Ah! Doublecabs are taxed differently. I'll put up some more information later today. Doublecabs are the people's car here so Duty and Road tax is very low and thats why, in Paphos, you see so many.

My advice – don’t try and import a car. Too risky, nobody knows the rules and it would definitely be liable for duty if you are going to work here.
As you said, the double-cabs are very cheap (mine was £12,800 on the road with air-con, leather, CD, cover, etc.) because the duty is so low (just 50c per cc no matter how large the engine).
If you import the Landy, it could be classed as a 4 x 4 and not a double cab in which case the duty is (I think) as much as £8 per cc dependent on the engine size.
Buy a new double-cab or a second-hand one from an ex-pat (not a Cypriot, it will be knackered). |
