We all know that identity politics run deep in Cyprus...

I would like those posting to meditate on the difference between "racism", "xenophobia" and "banter" which I loosely define as follows:

"racism" is ........".

The discrimination and hostility against other people just because they happen to be different in any way whatsoever (ethnicity, religion, color, beliefs etc).

For instance, the slanderous and biased attacks of the neo Cypriots of This forum against all Greeks without exception and all Greek Cypriots who feel Greek is a typical expression of racism.

No.

Racism is discrimination based on race. Not on religion, colour or beliefs....

There are too many problems in this world caused by people shouting racism when (for instance) their religion is attacked.

Absolutely true, Kimon. Bias and bigotry against those perceived to be political enemies is a major part of the same degenerate loathings of humankind as any racist in the classical sense. Intolerance of differences.

You are right that racism is to define discrimination based on racial criteria. BUT. it has come to mean discrimination against something different something we do not approve of, something we do not believe in. For instance, like you point out discrimination based on religious criteria is, in our days, characterize as racism. But how would people around the world call it? Missallodoxia? That would be the proper definition I agree. BUT, unfortunately, they are not all Greek educated. So, they are content with racism.
On the other hand, saying that racism has nothing to do with different colour is, I think, wrong. Isn't there the scientific distinction of thje various human races acording to colour (the "white race" the "black race" etc, etc)?

Now, coming to the hostility towards different beliefs that again is determined as miss-allo-doxia (to hate the different belief (dogma) or opinion and to attack or persecute those who express it). Again, I believe that missallodoxia, in it's wider sense, can be very well be expressed with racism.

Well, you have to have an accepted single definition for something.....

I think it is generally accepted that racism is discrimination based on race.

There are laws in many countries that protect us against racism. So, for instance I cannot refuse to employ you because you are black or Chinese...

Once you try and stretch the definition of racism to encompass everything you end up with meaningless rules and regulations and everybody shouting racism when they believe (rightly or wrongly) that they have been discriminated against.

So for instance, if I employ you and you then claim to worship the 'Cult of Friday' and therefore require that day off (along with Saturday and Sunday) I get into problems because you call me a racist when I refuse...

Racism is extremely serious and is demeaned when applied universally....

Forget Wiki, here is another definition: -

Dictionary.com wrote:
a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.

Racism can be shown by any race to any other - not just black and white.

By your own words you show yourself to be racist...

who defines the "human races"?... "Whites" never considered Cypriots to be "White" until they got worried that they were being outnumbered by their own constructions of others... even now their are many that are unsure... in fact I don't want to have anything to do with the concept of "race" I prefer to talk about "peoples"... "race" has no scientific basis... there are more genetic variations within so called "races" then there are between them... why for example do we not consider all tall people to be a "race"... that has as much scientific basis... thus the whole notion of "racism against Whites" is laughable... whether someone of light skin can convince others that they are not "White" whilst they enjoy all the privileges of being "White" is another matter...

I see the neo Cypriots as a "in vogue'" type of thing in cyprus today, nothing serious just some silly people who follow very well. The British empire tried to install into the Greek cyp psyche that Hellenism was dead in Cyprus, and they did not succeed, EOKA and the Greek Cyps had this response "NAI GENNITHIGAMEN KAI THA PETHANOUME HELLENNES"!!!!......We were born and we will die Greeks!!!!

Clearly. I mean it is racist to be attacked just for being a Greek or a Greek Cypriot who defends his Greeknesss and rejects his descent from some Choirokoitia pig sty.
