We have been going to the south of the island for a few years and would like to travel into the north this year. We will be using a car hired at Paphos airport but realise the insurance will not be valid for the north, so where is the best place to drive to, leave the car and take public transport to in order to see the best tourist areas? I've heard Kyrenia is beautiful but can we get there easily by public transport? We would only want to make it a day trip from the Paphos area. Any help and advice welcomed please! |

| Personally, I'd drive to the borders and leave the car there, walk over the border then catch a taxi to wherever you want to go. |

I agree with Hazza if you don't want/are allowed to take the car to the north.
Just comes to my mind: there is a brand new checkpoint to cross the border in the Paphos area, in Zodhia. So you don't need to go via Nicosia anymore. |

Even if your rental company does allow you to take the car across the border, you will need to take out insurance on the other side - as this will be third party only and severly limited in the size of the claim- it is risky.

I can't see public transport being feasible, but if your going by car then a really nice route is to cross at Zodeia, you can then drive to Kyrenia allong the coast. You do pass a number of villa developments, and some fairly tacky tourist developments, but parts of the coast are really nice, and Kyrenia is certainly worth seeing. If you stay all day you can drive back to Pafos through Nicosia and the motorway, which is easier after it gets dark.
The car crossing is signposted 'Metahan and Kermia', don't go to the Ledra as its pedestrians only thehre.
Car insurance at the border costs 15 pounds for up to 3 days amd 20 for up to a month.
A negative 'sight' is the large number of Turkish Army camps you pass on the way, but you need to see these to understand the full picture. just don't be tempted to take photos in these areas! |

It is the Internet Site provider who determines which companies advertise here, not Admin. This might all change in the near future.

| I did this this summer with my grandfather to see the land. WE drove from Limassol. From paphos you should drive to limmasol. then follow governors beach out and youll have to get more detailed directions for that. But we took the car through the whole trip. At the border u park and fill out some forms and pay. You are allowed to cross with the car and I advise u to keep the car so u can drive around and go anywhere you want. the Cabs will rip you off. Also you have no insurance on the other side cause its considered a whole diff country. the car has no insurance. And u pay for a temporary visa on the border. The road signs are horrible and u will loose your way, make sure to ask the locals, they are friendly and most will help, some even got into their cars so we could follow them. PLaces to go i advise you go to the tip of the tail, Apostolos Adreas is the church where they tooks over and cut the cross. From there you can see Turkey across the sea. then I advise you go to Kyrenia which is the most beautiful place in N. Cyprus. U will have to travel through Lefkosia. Make sure U ask and have a road map with you. There are some tourist centers also. Plan your trip before you leave from Southern Cyprus and ask people for the best route. If you are planning on staying at a hotel the best are in Kyrenia, they are casino hotels, and there are many restaurants by the water. That is all i can tell you, I have only been there once, hope the advise Helps! good luck and enjoy |
