If he paid for the hire car with a credit card the company will charge him for it, and it will be at the higher rate, so he is probably better off paying now.

Seems like a lot of trouble to avoid a parking fine!

If they have his name, which they do if they have his credit card, then the police will find him. I think you have to pay within 15 days, then it is 50% more if you pay after 15 days up to 1 month. After that they can take you to court and the fines will be much much more.

If only it was that easy…

The Z car company will simply fill out the section…

“If you were not the driver please indicate the name of the driver:”

And supply evidence of the hiring contract!

That would be OK for a speeding fine, but parking fines have to be paid by the owner of the vehicle.

Ok, fair enough but I’m sure the fine print of the hiring contract (which most never bother to read) will make some reference to parking tickets being the onus of the customer while the car is in their possession.

The bottom line (for our wondering friend above) is that Z car companies are not stupid and will have encountered these scenarios hundreds of times so they know exactly what to do to get justice!

Then maybe it would be polite if you offered to pay the fine. :)

(Unless he's older, of course. Greek custom: eldest pays.)

Got a ticket in a Z some 5-6 years ago when parked along the prom in Larnaca.

Amusingly, there were some dozens and dozens of other cars parked along there and the only two cars to get ticketed were ours and a car next to it that had illegal plates from the Illegal Regime.

Needless to say the fine wasn't paid, well at least not by us anyway, even though the hire company had card details and we never heard anymore about it.
