everytime one makes a value judgement one is effectively making a critique, which need not be negative , indeed the very act of praising these ads (or not) which is what this thread is about is a criticism of them, and indeed to poke fun at perceived American values (which may or may not be accurate) using a sterotypical represnetation of a Greek Yiayia (again which may or may not be accurate ) essentialy involves a critical process of both.

We ln the UK did of course have a sterotypical Grandmother portrayed in BT Adds by Maureen Lipmann in the 1980's

Why is a Jewish mother/gran a stereotype for British women, stud?

Oi Vey! - the adverts were for BT and shown in the UK - but I never used the word British in relation to her stereotyping - which was implicitly Jewish

Curiously, there is no overt reference in the screened adverts to Beattie's Jewishness, although she is one of Britain's best known fictional Jews. She does not appear to be especially frum; a mid-shot of her refrigerator reveals no visibly kosher contents, and she never mentions anything specifically Jewish. The viewer is left to infer her identity from her (mildly) Yiddish-influenced manner of speaking and the casting of a Jewish actress in Maureen Lipman.

So are you saying that the "UK" can be stereotyped by a (mildly Yiddish) Jewish woman but not "Britain"?

(Even though she was advertising for "British Telecom"... )

I simply decribed her as sterotype (of which there are many) and I can assure you she was not like my grandmothers (may they rest in peace). No doubt equally stereoptypical characters could be found linked to other of the many diverse groups within Britain by which one can carachterise people in so many different ways. it is you who are seeking to twist if not pevert what I did not say to cover every grandmother in Britain when clearly it is stereotype of one one type of grandmother (and mother) from one minority group in Britain.
