Here is the passage from Walter Isaacson’s Jobs’ biography about how Steve Jobs got Bill Gates to save the company with a $150 million investment – this is Jobs speaking:

I called up Bill and said, “I’m going to turn this thing around.” Bill always had a soft spot for Apple. We got him into the application software business. The first Microsoft apps were Excel and Word for the Mac. So I called him and said, “I need help.” Microsoft was walking over Apple’s patents. I said, “If we kept up our lawsuits, a few years from now we could win a billion-dollar patent suit. You know it, and I know it. But Apple’s not going to survive that long if we’re at war. I know that. So let’s figure out how to settle this right away. All I need is a commitment that Microsoft will keep developing for the Mac and an investment by Microsoft in Apple so it has a stake in our success.

And that's the main thing... Apple couldn't stick around to fight anything anyway!

Apple had already received other funds for the alleged plagiarism but were still dying and then the US vs Ms debacle came up and Apple were saved with even more funds.

In all honesty Apple COPIED Xerox’s graphical environment and Microsoft then copied Apple’s so Steve Jobs was full of shit pretending to be the inventor of the GUI!

the important thing about apple and microsoft is that ms was very close to being broken up through anti trust laws here in the usa, the injection by Gates also saved MS from being torn to pieces. employees of MS have said that FBI agents were beginning to seize documents from their offices in preparation for the antitrust case......

Exactly. Committing to develop Office and IE for Mac convinced investors to stay in the game a little longer. 1997 was a couple years into the beginning of the major antitrust stuff. MS was facing suits from lots of directions. But the suits that were important were from Apple (Interface, feel and design, streaming media, etc).

I think MS/Intel could have been in huge trouble for what they did with Quicktime code. MS cut a deal to get them off the hook. It wasn't an act of altruism. The 150M investment was the settlement. It was actually better for Microsoft than Apple. But Jobs got what he wanted which was the time to turn Apple around. The rest is history.

As Bill Gates said at the time: “We think Apple makes a huge contribution in the computer industry. And we think it’s going to be a lot of fun helping out.” :D

Actually Apple licensed it fair and square, and lucky for us, because it's unlikely Xerox would have taken it to the mass market if Apple hadn't. The result was the Apple Macintosh, which Microsoft later copied to create Windows. :D

The compensation for the Xerox PARC technology sharing deal with Apple was in the form of one million dollars of Apple stock. The rationale: if Apple does well, Xerox will benefit from Apple’s success. The compensation is not bad for showing some prototypes that Xerox didn’t know what to do with. :D

There was no bailout as such, Sotos. The investment by Microsoft in Apple was a settlement of a patent lawsuit. In fact, the investment was just an initial payment that would be spread out over the next few years. The settlement allowed Apple to stave off bankruptcy and the rest is history.

Look where they are now. Apple is the most valuable company in the world. Today the iPhone brings in more revenue than the whole of Microsoft. One Apple product, something that didn’t exist five years ago, has higher sales than everything Microsoft has to offer. More than Windows, Office, Xbox, Bing, Windows Phone, and every other product that Microsoft has created since 1975.

Do you think Apple will bail out Microsoft when the time comes?

Microsoft is collapsing. You may think that this is kind of harsh or maybe even an improbable outcome, but as you read through the story, you see that he is exactly right.

It was a bailout ;) And iPhone doesn't have "higher sales" than Windows or Office  Maybe you wanted to say that Apple makes much more money per item sold because it rips off people? ;) For Microsoft to collapse people need to have an alternative to switch to. Currently there isn't any real competition to Windows so even if a Windows version is a flop most people just skip that version and upgrade with the next one... they don't buy an iMac

110 Million of iPhones were sold (all versions). Microsoft sold more than 600 million licences of just Windows 7. Apple doesn't win in number of sales ... it wins only on how much they overcharge for their products ;)
