Nicosia walls

Nicosia walls

I have a question, there are part of the walls that are below the ground level, what was their purpose? they don't seem to block anything.

this was probably to form a moat / ditch to make it harder to attack.

The ground was lower... That space between the wall and the road was much deeper.
Also, just outside the municipality, where the excavations were made, the purpose was to find the original wall because at that point the british government 100 years back wanted to make the road there wider, so they demolished the wall and rebuild it some meters backwards
