Have you checked for any leaks under your car motor?

Postby Gagman » Wed Oct 23, 2013 12:21 am

I had my MOT done last week and was happy not to spend anything more than the cost of the test.Sadly,I parked in our driveway and noticed a drop, thinking I overfilled the water for the window washer.Next day even more drops,so I checked to see what is going on?
It was diesel and was coming out from somewhere?
I had a coffee with my Friend from the MOT at the local coffee shop. The village guys overheard our conversation,as they always do.It turns many people are finding leaks under their motors.
The reason I we have been told by my Friend, was that a new synthetic additive was be mixed into the diesel and is eroding the O rings, which allows the fuel to escape. It has been added into petrol also.
So people, keep an eye out on you car,as lost fuel, is lost Euros in your pocket.

Thanks for the info but what’s the solution? Keep changing O rings? :?

Depending on how old the car is,but many older cars will start showing the signs and the rubber O rings will have to be replaced, also there are several O rings in the fuel system. Some are a 5 minute job others will have to have full restoration, usually being sent to the capital.

Boys... be warned... modern diesels have "common rail" injection systems with reservoirs of fuel at very, very, very high pressure. Don't attempt DIY jobs on these.
