Sorry buddy but I am going to have to disagree with you on this.

He was a Statesman and in my opinion the best President we ever had by a long shot!

That's bullshit and you know it.

He was always acting in favour of RoC interests, and I firmly believe that if we had him as president from 1960, we would not be in the mess we are today.

If the RoC didn't play bullshit politics to appease the Soviet Union and AKEL, then perhaps things would be different. If that equates to appeasing US/UK, then so be it!

Clerides, was the best President Cyprus ever had because:

--Understood Turkey's weaknesses and acted accordingly
--Understood well, that a strong military was needed in order to get results at the negotiations table.
--Upgraded the Cypriot National Guard to a modern fighting force
--Signed a defense pact with Greece
--Ordered S-300 anti air missiles from Russia
--Built a Naval base at Zygi
--Encouraged the '96 motorcycle rally in Dherinia

In the years prior to his Presidency, Turkey/Denktash were absent from the negotiations table, citing many times that the Cyprus problem was solved in 1974. After the build up of the National Guard and the ordering of the S-300 missiles, Turkey's stance changed dramatically. They came back to the negotiations table and Denktash was sacked. The S-300 missile crisis and the events at Dherenia in 96 placed Cyprus and the Cyprus problem on the front pages of newspapers around the world. That type of publicity, he generally thought, is Turkey's weakness. A world being reminded of Turkeys continued illegal occupation of Cyprus.

That's 3 political disasters right there!

--Built a Naval base at Zygi

You sure? I remember that being in existence way before he ever assumed presidency. That was always the OYK camp and naftiko.

it may have been the OYK camp since 74, but it was upgraded into a large naval base in order that it could accommodate large Greek frigates…What about the Andreas Papandreou military airport in Paphos?…

As for the 3 so called disasters, the pact is still in existence, and i do recall Greek Air Force f-16's flying all over the place while Clerides was President. As for the S-
300 and motorcycle rally in Dherinia.. These two incidents highlighted Turkey's aggression and occupation of Cyprus, both political victories. First because it showed the Turks that a confrontation with the Greek Cypriots was not out of the question and second the world press learned again of Cyprus' problem.

Question for you GR..How many Turk soldiers were killed on the green line, while Clerides was President? I know of 3, there may have been more..and how many since then and how many before?

The only times Turkey was on the back foot was when Clerides was in power in Cyprus and Andreas Papandreou was in power in Greece. We had the single defence dogma and the S300s. Then there was Imia. This is when Greece should have gone to war with Turkey.

Everyone else just stuffed things up.

This man wasn't afraid and knew how far to push, unlike the bozos in power today.

Statesman or disaster?

59: London Conference – supporter with Makarios of a disastrous undemocratic constitution that led to never-ending strife on Cyprus.

90s: Purchased and then boasted the S-300 missile system to the point of the well known debacle with Turkey.

90s: Formed closer bonds with shitty Greece which led to further erosion of Cypriotism and solidified double enosis.

96: Was in power during the motorcycle rally in Derinya which ended up with clashes and two people dead.

90s: Commenced EU accession steps – A debacle for Cyprus I need not go into any detail!
