I knew no better and behaved as all my piers did, neither the schools nor the church instilled in us kids the sanctity of animal life, the beauty of birds singing, little kittens and puppies, the fact that they too shared this planet with us and had feelings not dissimilar to our own, they felt pain, fear and joy at getting something to eat.

Much has changed since the 50s, thanks mainly to Brits and Charlies, animal welfare has improved and Cypriots are more aware of the feelings of animals than in years gone by.

On my recent visit to Limassol, I visited my late wifes grave, at the entrance of the cemetery in Ayios Athanasios there exists a large number of abandoned cats, in their hundreds, a sad sight. Some are run over by visiting cars oblivious to the need to exercise care in driving at the entrance, the cats run to greet every car hoping for some food.

After a family dinner we were left with an abundance of meat, chicken, pork, sheftalies, kioftedes and much more.

I cut it all up and on my visit to the cemetery the following morning I distributed the food to the cats making sure that little kittens also received their share. My other third and her daughter who absolutely adore cats were with me making sure that the little ones had some leftovers.

An old boy was coming out of the the cemetery entrance and called out to me.
" O KOSMOS PINA CHE ESI TAIZIS TOUS KATTOUS " (People are starving and you are feeding the cats )

Not one to take easily to unwarranted reprimands I approached the old boy and politely asked if he believed in God
Veveos he replied , I don't, I responded, but I believe in the sanctity of all life and since you believe in God therefore you must also believe that all life was created by Him.He turned and got into his car not saying a word just shaking his head.

Such comments typify the absence in some Cypriots of the need to care for animals.

As I was getting into my car to drive away, a car pulled up next to me and an elderly couple of Cypriots got out carrying bags. The lady approached me and asked if I was the one that put the food for the cats, getting ready to rebuff her as well, I listened as she politely asked if next time I come with food I put it on the pavements as to avoid having cats in the concourse where visiting cars might run them over.

Of course I said, I didn't think of this.

I watched as she and her man begun feeding the cats from the contents of their bags. I approached and told her that what she was doing was extremely kind, thank you she said, we have been doing this for over 20 years since we came back to Cyprus from the UK....

They originated from the Famagusta region.

This is just rubbish! We have many animals posting on this forum, more than humans.

You have touched upon a very important area i.e. "bird trapping hot spots"!
That’s the propaganda we hear from the bird lobby: CABS, BirdLife Cyprus etc

Yes areas of the sovereign bases are used (persistently) by illegal bird trappers. That is not propaganda that is just fact. Yes the sovereign bases police have run operations at times against illegal bird trapping, in conjunction with the Game Fund of the RoC, as do the RoC police in the areas they are responsible for again with the Game Fund. If anything the 'politics' of the sovereign base areas makes it harder to run such operations in those areas than outside. In any case there is no solution to the problem of illegal bird trapping in such 'raids'. The people on the ground that are arrested in such raids are typically illegal foreign workers, easily replaced, whilst those controlling the illegal activities remain 'removed' and safe from such raids. There is no solution in 'police raids' be they by SBA police in their areas or RoC police in theirs and nor is their any solution in legislation alone. There is however an easy viable solution, which is a general change in attitudes amongst Cypriots, which is why all this 'ain't us guv', 'others are worse guv', 'this is just unfair Cypriot bashing guv' distraction and denial is so fucking frustrating and depressing. It undermines and prevents the simple cheap and easy solution to this very real environmental problem.

This is an ENVIRONMENTAL issue ffs. Are we incapable as Cypriots of seeing ANYTHING outside our distorting lens of perceived persecution and victimhood and history ?

I loved this comment " ... which is why all this 'ain't us guv', 'others are worse guv', 'this is just unfair Cypriot bashing guv' distraction and denial is so fucking frustrating and depressing.... "

It's the same F attitude the TCs have to the other side.

Your efforts would be better spent on removing the illegals from the northern occupied territories than to worry about a few ampelopoulia. Even though they are so tasty :)

A couple of not so funny video's, there's more made by CABS about Cyprus illegal bird trapping and show CABS volunteers being attacked, as of course it's all about money...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_zdDBAp ... ata_player

Shown on German tv at the time, but not shown on Cyprus tv, it got mentioned in the CM though.

Some of the volunteers ended up in hospital, but every year they come back to try and save more birds.

As this is a Cyprus forum, telling those that need to know what goes on in Cyprus is IMO important, what happens in other countries is just as important too, but is more relevant on forums in those countries. Just continually pointing out that it happens elsewhere doesn't deal with such an important issue happening daily in Cyprus. For instance the normal general public in the UK, IF they knew this was going on illegally would go out and find the culprits themselves and no doubt give their own type of punishment.

There's a lot that doesn't ring true about the Bases being used by bird trappers.

Why would anyone, specifically go to the Base areas to set traps? :? They are the most heavily guarded areas of our free territory.

I haven't been that near either of the Bases for years, but they were never easy to get in and out of without being spotted, stopped and asked for credentials etc. So how come so many peasant Cypriots are in and out with huge nets, sophisticated equipment (cars ?) etc constantly defeating these British heavily armed Forces (with their drones and their Nuclear deterrents and their shitloads of weapons they've stashed on our island).

What's more the article states they caught 1.5 Million birds this way, on the Bases! Mish! My gawd, these Bases must be riddled with hundreds of trappers all the live-long day for them to round up sooooo many birds. Unbelievable!

It's just not true and it doesn't matter how much Milo screams she MUST tell us how sick we are ... sometimes, we can just tell what the Brits are really interested in.

It was quite ordinary!

The only good bit was the first part with the monkeys jumping up and down. It was downhill from there!
