Btw it has recently come to my attention that there has apparently been a case of misuse of BCBA accreditation in Cyprus.

The BCBA qualification for ABA is administered by the BACB and they guard the use of their letters of accreditation. They list on their website who is qualified in a particular country. Apparently There are three BACB BCBA ABA therapists in Cyprus and I suggest use the BACB site to check if anyone you are working with using the letters BCBA in any form is one of those three.

In this respect their site also lists disciplinary matters and there was recently a #3 coding for disciplinary actions , which I understand relates to misuse of letters of accreditation, involving Cyprus.

I have also had it recommended to generally check the qualifications of therapists and if necessary ask anyone you are thinking of working with for written consent to take up references and check any major qualifications with the issuing academic institution. Many institutions will not confirm the validity of a qualification to a third party without written consent.

Wow, thanks for the tips.
But I think the certification is not so important taking into account the amount of specialists in this field on the island. You said 3? Very sad. We've been receiving already 'treatment' from 'certified" specialists in one center (will not name it). I wish we never knew them. I think after 2-3 lessons I will figure out what kind of specialist I deal with.
Thanks for Monorodi. Never heard of them. Will contact them ASAP

You are quite correct that BCBA qualification is not the be all and all of ABA, and there no doubt other competent people in providing ABA therapy who are not BACB certified, we are looking at using such a person, but I would certainly be very cautious about dealing with anyone who might have claimed a qualification they do not have, and as indicated, the BACB website indicates there is a case against someone who has seemingly done that in Cyprus.

Provision of psychological services is in fact regulated by law and before anyone can call themselves a psychologist they must be registered, so check that out too.

Thank you for the tips Puffik,

I have made my search as well regarding the island and i must say that it is better than what i initially believed. There are some interesting professionals around with impressive CVs and work. I understand that Cyprus is a small country and maybe not that developed but in terms of ABA i believe that there are some promising centers. Having spent 2 years in the UK and having my son placed in ''special school'' for children with Asperger's and having paid thousands of pounds for those 2 years that only resulted in an escalation of his behaviours, i can safely judge who is worth trying and who is not. Unfortunately, the syndrome is for ever and i need to make the best decision for my son's life. I don;t want to keep him at home just for him to be happy.

I am not sure how psychological services fit into the ABA field. In the UK at least they are different entities and they have different organizations. There are psychologists who are doing ABA but not all Behavior Analysts are psychologists.I have failed to find any info on this for Cyprus.
