Petition your MP for return of Varosha

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Petition your MP for return of Varosha

Postby Jerry » Tue Jan 14, 2014 5:20 pm

If you are a Cypriot living in UK please consider sending your MP an e-mail with a link to this feature about Varosha, it was "front page news" on BBC homepage this morning. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-25496729

A brief message with your name and address to show you are a constituent is all you need. You can find your MPs e-mail address by clicking on his/her name in this list, scroll down to find it.

Every little helps,

Well I've sent dozens of e-mails to MPs and others today, I've even had one or two replies from MPs in other parts of the UK (not my own MP). Please do your bit for the return of Varosha and ask your UK friends to do the same, send the link while its topical.

Some of the replies:-
Are you a Croydon Central resident?
Noted with thanks.
Please provide your postal address and post code for a response
Thank you very much for taking the trouble to send this through to Henry Bellingham.
Thank you very much for contacting me regarding this matter.
With very best wishes,
Thank you for your recent email to Roberta regarding Turkey

Every little helps. :)

Well I do seem to be getting somwhere, several encouraging replies and this one just in:-

Dear Mr G........,
Thank you for your email. I am not sure whether you are my constituent or not, but I have been to (the edge of) Varosha on a number of occasions over the years and have seen for myself what it's like. I agree that it is about time not only that Varosha was given back to the people of Cyprus but that Turkish troops withdrew from the island altogether.
The UK is one of the Guarantor powers, as you rightly say, but without Greece, Turkey and the two communities coming to agreement about the future of all Cypriots, I am not sure what the UK can do on its own.
This morning I met the President of Cyprus, Nicos Anastadiadies, for breakfast and heard first hand what he is trying to do for a lasting permanent settlement in Cyprus.

Thank you for writing to me about a subject I care strongly about. I will continue to do all I can for Cyprus.

With best wishes,
F..... H.......

Come on chaps, e-mail your own MP if you are in UK or ask your UK friends to if you are in Cyprus.

It may appear quite trivial, but I found this on the popular Childrens BBC web page today.

If it is being covered in the kids 'Newsround' programme, its quite a significant move IMO. I've never seen coverage of Cyprus like this in my memory on a childs programme in the UK.

The return of Varosha alone will cause more harm than good IMHO.

Personally I'd rather not have it, because it would be the first step to losing the rest of the Island under illegal occupation.

Can't agree with that B25. IF Varosha is freed the international media will be in there like a pack of wolves. Turkish vindictiveness towards Greek Cypriots will be there for all to see. That, in my opinion, is the real reason they won't give it up until there's an overall settlement. Deserted Varosha is is a the most potent symbol of the occupation, in spite of the fact that it's unoccupied.
