No horsemeat in the moussaka, we hope. :D

I should hope not! Back in the day I would hope only the French had a penchant for that sort of thing :?

Has anyone watched "Dead Europe" ?

Yuck! I stopped a third of the way in.

It's the Australian-made film based on the supernatural book by Christos Tsiolkas. Young gay guy takes his Commie father's ashes back to Greece where he finds out the family were cursed ...

It's just bad. :(

If anyone has watched it all the way through, let me know if it's worth resuming; but it has put me off the Australian mindset completely!

That's another Greek made film that is utterly woeful.

Speaking of communists, many did migrate to Australia in the 50s. There are hundreds of declassified files from ASIO which is an intelligence agency responsible for surveillance on citizens and people living in Australia, military and public politicians, even Ministers, and consular officials or anyone else that comes under suspicion of Communism. Australia was always edgy about Communism during the Cold War. At the time, even kids were taught at school how to hide underneath their desk in case of nuclear attack. Hundreds of Greek Families, usually from Northern Greece who migrated to Australia were under surveillance. Many Cypriots that migrated to Australia and were found out to be connected to AKEL were under surveillance. Communism just was not tolerated.

As to the mindset. Well, the worst people in Australia generally seem to be Greeks and Cypriots. They are just shit people. They probably were not bad in Greece or Cyprus, or when they first arrived in Australia and worked hard as working class battlers trying to make a living. Now, the money has got to their heads. Australia is so wealthy now, every fool has made money. Own 2 pieces of land and you're a millionaire on paper. It's now a competition between many dollar driven Greek and Cypriot peasant (yes that is what they are - illiterate low class peasants) who couldn't rub 2 bob together 20 or more years ago, who has the bigger house or mansion and who drives the best car. It's improving slightly now that the older peasants are dieing out.

Australians on the other hand are probably wealthier on average but they are well grounded and heeled. You can talk to them easily. A lot less pretentious. They would usually have a 4wd and some a boat to go fishing on the weekends. They got money but they live a lifestyle too whereas the Greeks and Cypriot eat their own shit! Australians eat better because they are willing to spend on their dietary needs in order to get fresh food which comes at a price. Australia has become just so cosmopolitan. Streets are full, restaurants and bars packed. You wouldn't find any Greek and Cypriot peasants there. They are too busy staying home eating their own shit so they can afford to extend their mansion or buy a luxury German car to win some bragging rights. Maybe you will find their kids out and about.

I live in a high socio economic suburb that is very leafy. There is money all around. Usually, older Australian money or shit hot lawyers. There is a tv anchor, a sports anchor, stock brokers, surgeons, politicians, senior public servants, business people, the occasional new money arrivals, and some other ad hocs like myself perhaps who neither is a part of the old money but just fortunate I guess. You even have power families like Downer himself. None are pretentious because they all seem quite well heeled and hence a bit more down to earth and classier. Why do Cypriots and Greeks behave like morons! Well the truth is I really don't know why. I just have my own opinion and assessment. But it a a fact that many of them, are just woeful people and very lonely to because the Aussies don't have much to do with them either. They usually judge the Aussies and put them down so the Aussies just run a mile away from the negativity. It might be a Diaspora thing which explains you, Kurupetos and Yialooser.

So why is Australia like that? Well, there is a mining and energy boom. Consumer demand is through the roof. House and land prices will make you want to drool and believe you are in Monaco. People have high disposable incomes now, and if you were smart and invested in the 80s, 90s or even just 10 years ago, you would be quite well off today. It's only in the last 10 years or so when things just accelerated at a phenomenal pace.

Of course you have some Greeks and Cypriots who have managed to remain well grounded in this environment. Boomerang is one such Cypriot. He makes around 500,000 per month from his business. It probably fluctuates too but with all the money he has and is making, you just wouldn't know it at all! Very down to earth and well heeled. But he, like I make a point of staying away from the usual Greek and Cypriot peasant scum and are very Australianised. If this were a Cypriot Peasant from Paphos, you wouldn't be able to speak to them and you wouldn't want to.

By the way, it's not just the Greeks and Cypriots. It's usually all other migrants. Italians, Greeks, Poles, Asians(save those from Japan and Hong Kong). The Germans seem to be the best. There is truth in the fact that they are a strong race. Many people do not realize but after the Anglo influence, Australia is very Germanic. About 10% of the population. They are superior to Greeks and Cypriots in terms of their behaviour!

Greeks and Cypriots are just judgmental, Gossiping and pretentious peasants.

That's what happens when you make money quickly straight from the Kolokasi fields of Paphos or Oitilo!

You lose a sense of who you are and where you came from because you have this over inflated opinion of yourself as you think your the only one with money. They think it is their intelligence. They forget they are Illiterate Peasants. They also forget that their money is mostly due to the economic environment currently present in Australia. It's not as if they worked hard for the money down a mine shaft or on an oil rig.

One of the reasons why I love the US is because cost of living is cheap there. In Australia it's not!

If you don't believe me, ask Boomerang!

Here are some more examples of how dire and vain Greeks and Cypriots have become in Australia and in the US.

Now, allow me to make it very clear, that there are many Greeks and Cypriots who are excellent. Generally speaking those without money are ok, but some are still judgemental and gossip a lot. Those with money are generally bad but you will find a few who are fantastic and great people to know.

Unfortunately, the younger generations have turned their back on anything Greek or anything Cypriot because most have been hurt or shafted one way or another.

There is an underworld of Greeks and Cypriots who even hold secret meetings to talk about the rest which they call 'the provata' (sheep). The churches, community centers, schools, sporting teams, and other clubs and societies are to be avoided. You will always be judged by your politics, what you wear, what you drive and where you live.

Doing business with Greeks and Cypriots is to be avoided at all costs. There are too many bad apples.

If you want a Lawyer, don't get a Greek Lawyer (there are a couple however that are good).

If you want a builder, don't get a Greek one. If you need an estate agent, don't get a Greek one.

If you want anything, just don't do anything with the Greeks or reveal anything about your finances. Stick to the Aussies (Anglo, Irish or German). If you see a Greek name, run a mile! The Aussies are better, more down to earth, cheaper, and more professional. They rely on return business and their reputation means everything. Of course, there are some bad apples amongst the Aussies too, but generally speaking they are ok.

Do not let Greeks into your house because they will try and check you out, unless you know them very well.

Unfortunately they are a scummy lot. Life is just so stress free without them!

There seems to be an elite (in their own minds) that likes to be in control. In reality they are just dirty rotten scoundrels.

And they really do think they're some bodies! In reality they are just Gypsies! Used car salesmen trying to out do each other and eager to rip you off and sell you a worthless lemon.

Really sorry BIG, but Greeks really do lag behind with their manners, and sophistication which is a little sad.

They always try and get one over the next person. They are not laid back, relaxed or at all natural.

And the funny thing is they get all judgemental over the Aussies. Do you know how many times the parents have fights with their kids because they are seeing an Aussie guy or girl? For some reason they think they are superior. Many times they would say "they are not like us". For me, I think it is great that the Aussies are not like the Greeks.

Many many Greeks just do not have a good grasp on reality.

For me, and as an average, the Aussies are nicer people and more down to earth. They will drink and break bread with you and have a laugh. If you say hello to a Greek and your not dressed for the occasion, you will generally get a bad look.

On the same token, for me, I believe Americans are nicer than Aussies. I don't know why that is. It just seems to me, that every American in the US will always bend over backwards! Real nice they are!

Oh, they also seem to be in a time warp! They go to a foreign country like Australia or US in the 50's, 60s or 70s and they appear to be stuck in that decade.

Many years later they return to Cyprus and Greece and find that the place has moved on and then they say things like "Cyprus or Greece has been ruined (halase) and then they get all judgmental with the Greeks or Cypriots!

I don't know, but to me they are just plain weird! I don't get them at all! But I do get Greeks and Cypriots in Greece and Cyprus and I also get the Aussies.

I hope I have cleared things up for you about the Greek and Cypriot mindset vis a vis the Aussies!

I once heard of a Greek Boy who was indeed very Gay. I didn't know him personally but I heard of his sad story.

This boy grew up in a tough and very religious prim and proper Greek family. He too was very religious and quite close to the Church. So one day, he goes to confession, and Greek Orthodox confessions are face to face. So he tells the Priest that he has sinned because he is attracted to and has had relations (not sure if that part is 100%) with other men. Don't know what was said after he confessed that or what the Priest's reaction was but I was told it was not at all supportive.

Anyway, the Priest broke the news to his family in a misguided attempt to help the boy cure his "illness". Unfortunately, the parents felt that their family had been embarrassed and such like and words were exchanged. The boy was disowned by the family.

The boy attempted suicide. Happy to report that the boy is still alive to this day and has the support he needs from other sources (and there are many organizations in Australia dealing with depression and sexual orientation issues).

That is the mentality here amongst the Greeks and Cypriots GIG.

Another insight into the Greek mindset.
