"trnc" To Be Abandoned in European Elections ...???

Postby bill cobbett » Fri Jan 24, 2014 4:06 pm

Big news on CY at the mo is the likely decision to auto-register 80,000 CYs living under the No End of False and Broken Promises Regime of "trnc" for the European Elections.

The CY PIO summarises "Afrika" on the issue.

Afrika asks ... who is going to abandon "trnc"... ???

Well, Mr Levant, there's nothing to stop you seeking election as an MEP now, is there...???

" ...Under the title “All Turkish Cypriots are voters in the south”, Turkish Cypriot daily Afrika newspaper (24.01.14) reports that according to what it is said, the Turkish Cypriots could vote in ballot boxes which will be put at the crossing points. In its daily “Letter from Afrika” column, the paper writes that the decision is important and that the candidatures could be submitted until 2 May for the election of six members of the European Parliament (MEP). The paper goes on and notes: “30 thousand votes are needed in order for a candidate to be elected. That is, if all Turkish Cypriot voters participate in these elections and support two Turkish candidates, it is possible to take these two seats at the parliament in this manner.

However, it seems that for now there is no one willing for this. Who will abandon the separate election and especially the TRNC? Is it possible?”... "

Sener Levent must be one of our readers, he's taken up the suggestion above by announcing his candidature for the EP elections.

From the CY PIO...

"... Sener Levent will be a candidate in the EP elections
Writing in his daily column in Turkish Cypriot daily Afrika newspaper (26.01.14), columnist Sener Levent reported that he will be a candidate in the European Parliament (EP) elections which will be held in May. Levent wrote that he does not agree with the stance of the Turkish Cypriot side on the issue and points out that he was surprised by the stance of those Turkish Cypriots known as the “biggest supporters of peace and solution” on the island. ..."

The Greek Cypriots have obviously not read the below properly:

SOURCE:
http://www.lgcnews.com/trnc-political-parties-reject-souths-eu-elections-offer/

Officials of the TRNC government have reacted unfavourably towards the South’s move to facilitate the participation of Turkish Cypriots in the European parliamentary elections.

Turkish Cypriot daily ‘Kibris Postasi’ reported that a source from the President Eroglu’s office said that even in 1960 both communities elected their own representatives in separate elections and argued that today, they should be doing the same.

The same source said that the action of the South Cyprus government is, “institutionally rejecting the TRNC and dragging the individuals under the roof of the Republic of Cyprus”.

It also added that the Greek Cypriots were trying to wash their hands of responsibility before the EU and that “no one speaks about the issue of being elected”.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ozdil Nami, told ‘Kibris Postasi’ that the TRNC government could not discriminate between its citizens who have South Cyprus identity cards and those who do not. He believed that the decision taken by the South was aimed at “deceiving” some deputies within the EU. Nami noted that the ballot boxes could not be placed in the TRNC because the acquis of the EU is suspended in these territories. He said that placing the ballot boxes in the South would be “totally contrary to democratic principles”, because one of the requirements of democracy is that the ballot boxes should be “brought to the voters’ doorstep”.

Further, Huseyin Ozgurgun, the chairman of the National Unity Party (UBP) told the newspaper that the Greek Cypriots had been forced to make such an amendment because of what he described as “pressure by the EP” and declared that the people who will represent the Turkish Cypriots at the EP should be citizens of the TRNC and be elected by the citizens of the TRNC.

Finally, Cemal Ozyigit, chairman of the Social Democracy Party (TDP) said that his party did not want Turkish Cypriots to vote in elections held in the South. He added that during recent contacts in Brussels, EU officials had told them that they wanted two seats in the European parliament to be held by Turkish Cypriots who have been elected by Turkish Cypriots.

He argued that by obliging Turkish Cypriots to vote at polling booths in the South, their participation in the elections in such a manner was “inappropriate” both politically and domestically.

He also said that this would be contrary to the principles of the Cypriot republic laid down in 1960.

In Particular:
Turkish Cypriot daily ‘Kibris Postasi’ reported that a source from the President Eroglu’s office said that even in 1960 both communities elected their own representatives in separate elections and argued that today, they should be doing the same.

Sener Levent to stand for MEP

TURKISH Cypriot publisher and writer Sener Levent will stand as a candidate for Member of the European Parliament (MEP) in the May euro elections, he said.
It will be the first time a Turkish Cypriot has stood for MEP since Cyprus joined the EU in 2004.
Last week, the government approved legislation that makes it easier for Turkish Cypriots to vote in European Parliament (EP) elections by registering those eligible on the electoral roll automatically.
The bill provides that all Cypriot citizens who are eligible to vote, including those living in the north with Republic identity cards, will be automatically registered on the electoral roll and will not have to apply. Some 80,000 Turkish Cypriots are believed to hold Republic of Cyprus identity cards.
Cyprus is entitled to six MEPs. Theoretically, Turkish Cypriots could elect two representatives, if they all turned out to vote in the May 26 ballot.
Turkish Cypriot political parties, except the New Cyprus Party (YKP), have argued that the Cyprus government’s decision was taken “only for the show”.
They say both sides should determine their EP representatives in separate elections
But writing his daily column in Afrika yesterday, Levent said he did not agree with this stance, especially coming from some of the “biggest supporters of peace” on the island.
“I believe that these elections are a great opportunity for cooperation and solidarity between the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots,” he said. “I am a candidate because I want to see how much we have managed to overcome the wall of nationalism here. We will be saved on this island only when a Turk defends the rights of the Greeks and a Greek defends the rights of the Turks.”

80,000 TCs might hold RoC ids but over half of them live in the UK so Sener Levent is right to reach out to the GCs for support as they are his only hope for a foothold to western civilisation.

This dinosaur affront to democracy needs to be confined to the dustbin of history.

However, the TCs' wish for representation should be seen as acceptance that the RoC was right in what it did to join the EU and that it is the ONLY legitimate power on the island, representing ALL the people.
