Absence of Asians from sport and the arts...

An interesting letter in today's Guardian. As Cypriots are a little Asian it is pertinent to us.

In what way are Cypriots "a little Asian"? In the same way everybody else in the world is or in some other more specific way?

Separation and oneness, an endless dialectic ;)

Identity is always political based on what the definer wants to achieve.

Cyprus is a member of the Afro-Asian Peoples' Liberation Organisation.

I would say we are Afro-Asian and European, being at the centre of the three continents.

This is a political position not a spiritual one, you don't have to share it

And yet, a genius like you could answer it in a nutshell.

Identity is always political based on what the definer wants to achieve.

So you have stated your 'political' definition of Cypriot identity, above?

Cyprus is a member of the Afro-Asian Peoples' Liberation Organisation.

Never heard of this organisation. Nevertheless, I am a member of a Tiger Conservation Trust - yet that doesn't make me a tiger.

I would say we are Afro-Asian and European, being at the centre of the three continents.

So now we are a blend of 3 continents? Why not the whole hog? Between those 3, we are the whole hog.

This is a political position not a spiritual one, you don't have to share it

You're saying, politically, Cyprus "is a little Asian" - that's what you meant, right? In that case, how does the sport fit in? Isn't that more physical, not political? How does the arts fit in? Isn't that more spiritual, not political?

Gig, these are good points. You have a political position vis a vis Turkey. I am not questioning that.
