Turkey Wants To Shut Down The Internet

Postby Maximus » Thu Feb 06, 2014 4:33 pm

Turkey's Parliament adopted a new Internet bill today that has been harshly criticized. The bill introduces measures that could potentially restrict access to information on the web. The EU is now seriously concerned.

I was anticipating this;

This Bill has been simmering in the background and Erdogan has just come back from his mini tour of Europe where he was vowing reforms to boost his country's EU bid. I thought to myself, who is this guy kidding? He is going to go back to Turkey and try to switch off the internet.....

For once Erdogan made the correct decision… I mean what do Turks need the Internet for? :?

He’ll be lucky to get them to stand on their two feet…

Turkish Cypriots once more embargoed by Turkey as they face internet censorship:

Kasif admits that Turkey's Internet law may affect the breakaway regime after all

Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (26.02.14) reports that the self-styled minister of public works and transportation Ahmet Kasif, said that the "2014 new Internet law" which is adopted in Turkey, will affect the breakaway regime after all. Kasif had stated a few days ago that the "TRNC" is a different "country", therefore the internet law adopted in Turkey will not affect it.

Kasif stated that the internet users who use server from Turkey may be affected by the new regulation, but they will try to limit the problems created as a result by the new law.

Google says Turkey is intercepting web traffic to spy on users

Turkey's decision to block access to popular websites has prompted many citizens to evade the ban using Google's domain name service. Now Google reports that most Turkish internet service providers are masquerading as Google DNS, presumably to spy on users. The move comes a week after reports emerged that Turkey had begun blocking access to Google DNS. "We have received several credible reports and confirmed with our own research that Google's Domain Name System (DNS) service has been intercepted," Google said in a blog post.

A DNS routes the domain name you type into your browser to the IP address of that site. In the early days of Turkey's crackdown on social media, Turkish citizens were able to restore their access to Twitter and YouTube by routing their traffic through Google's DNS. But now Turkish ISPs have set up servers that appear to be Google's, according to Google, putting users at risk that their traffic could be monitored.
