We've got the ideal role model.
We're gold medal winners and reigning world champions in banana emulating since 1821.

Anyway, congrats to Lydia and Australia.... Australia with plenty of snow and ice (yeah right), zero winter Olympic interest (yeah right).
A superb sporting system and world class institutions produce world class athletes in every department every year.

We've unfortunately adopted other mentalities and other systems.
To even suggest a Cypriot delegation at the winter Olympics to anyone, especially to Cypriots would be met with laughter at the gut level.

But yet we've managed to send 2. (Snow in Troodos every fkn year mind you... every fkn year!)
But... the state, predictably, shuns such activities. Such activities can't be politically manipulated, they can't be sucked for monetary gain, they're an intrusion in the Greco style politico dominated football domination, so have to absolutely be shunned and disregarded at all costs.
No money shall be allocated, and no support given to winter Olympics. ( we're mid eastern sand ni**ers remember?), no money to rugby despite their achievements, no money to Tio Ellinas (despite his achievements, he has publicly complained), no money to Pavlos Kontides (despite his achievements, he has publicly complained- politicians were the first to shower him with praise after the summer Olympics), little to no support for Kyriacos Ioannou, he has publicly complained... the list is endless.

When will we ever shift from a koumbarokratia to a meritocracy?

Here are our heroes.
The fact that we've got 2 representatives at the Sochi Olympics is an utter miracle.
I, as usual will be the first to commend them.

Good luck to:

Constantinos PAPAMICHAEL

and

Alexandra TAYLOR

All the best. Fly the flag as high and proud as you can, were proud of you.
Good luck.

Btw, witchety grubs taste good!

Australia has a very organized sporting system, probably the best in the world many would say. You will notice that Australia always punches well above its weight, and in fact wins more medals than anyone considering population.

Winter Olympics is a very clear example of how sophisticated the system is. Australia wins medals because the athletes are supported by the Government. Athletes train overseas with the best Russian, Canadian, and American coaching money can buy. Athletes are paid and supported. Then corporations such as QANTAS, powerade, Sanitarium sponsor them, even hotel chains offer accommodation.

There is no incentive for Lydia to represent Cyprus. And if she did, she probably would not have had the support and assistance to win a Gold and Bronze.

Also, Lydia is one tough cooky. She has an inspirational story to tell. She has battled many obstacles, and injuries. She is the first women to attempt very high difficulty jumps. She is a mother and runs a small sports rehabilitation business.

She is Australian through and through, of Cypriot and Italian heritage. Cypriots should care about her because she can inspire other Cypriot Athletes to never give up.
