Laiki Bank gone

Postby Paphitis » Tue Feb 25, 2014 2:07 pm

If you go to the Laiki Website you will see that Laiki Bank has been replaced by Bank of Cyprus.

Clicke here >>> http://www.laiki.com/EN/Pages/Home.aspx

So, what we are dealing with is a Banking Collapse. Laiki is officially Bankrupt. It does not exist as we once knew it. All assets and liabilities have been absorbed by the Bank of Cyprus. Lehman Bros was also wound up in the US a few years ago (largest Bank to fall in history?).

Therefore, Banks are not rewarded and do not have a get out of jail free card like so many have stated. The Bail in is to Guarantee Deposits up to 100,000.

An iconic Cypriot Business vanishes into thin air all because they were silly enough to buy Greek Bonds. What were they thinking?

Let's hope BoC survive because we need businesses like this and Cyprus Airways to fly the RoC Flag.

Very true however the assets have not all been absorbed by the Bank of Cyprus. The Laiki Legacy assets are managed by the resolution authority put in place by the government in order to dispose these assets for the benefit of its creditors i.e deposit holders, bond holders etc...Its biggest asset is the 18% of Bank of Cyprus shares making the Banks largest shareholder.

Thanks.

Couldn't it sell the 18% holding in BoC to recapitalize themselves and continue trading?

I guess the BoC shares took a significant hit as well.

Total amount of that holding is around 400m. Not near enough.
